break

Hey hey!

So, I started my break going to VA to see a certain Mr. Matthew. Then we, and 4 of his friends, went to West Virginia for a day trip to a "slots and races" casino! I lost 3 dolla dolla bills, ya'll...we played only the penny slots! Then I saw 2 horse races (not that exciting!). Then we ate at an applebees (grizzlebees, in Karen terms)...which toke well over an hour to serve us our food, so we all got free dessert (and each dessert was over 5 dollars!!!).

I basically did nothing all week, which sucks. Me and my friend Julie were talking that every time we come home, we can't sleep till, like 3am and then we wake up FREAKISHLY late. This happens EVERY TIME we come home. It really sucks, because half the day is lost. But we just end up staying out late....it's a vicious cycle.

My computer got a Smitfraud-c.core service trojan virus (wtf does that mean?!). F-prot and Spybot were good for nothing with it, so I did research on it online and tried to un-install it. Well, I ended up un-installing Novell Client...so now I can't even log into my computer! Hooray! ... I tried calling CNS and planned to go there today to drop it off, but the Helpdesk is closed all break! They're open everyother break! Why not this one?!

Tomorrow's a busy day for me. I'm getting a hair cut (I think I want to go short...but not too short, like it was in highschool...which you guys haven't seen). Then, I'm meeting with a DO at the hospital for lunch (He wants to talk to me about med school, but I have no idea what he's gonna say...wierd. But he's a hospitalist, and a cardiologist, I think, so he's basically exactly what I want to be when I grow up! He's young and just graduated NYCOM 3 years ago, so hopefully he still has connections there ;)

Also, Friday, Ann and Karen and I are suppose to make some Pisanke! Since I don't have my computer (I'm using my Mac...which doesn't have a right-click button, and that annoys me to the nth degree), I cannot sign on AIM to discuss this. Like I said, guys, I'm doing Lunch with this doctor (unfortunatly I have to work off of his schedule). So, you wanna do late afternoon?

I then work this weekend (6-2) and then Sunday is my brother's birthday, so we're going to Peterson's (aka 5 points) in Union...they have the BEST hot dogs ever!

Well, gotta work on my Med school apps...they're do next month! It's weird how I have to apply Junior year, then I find out next year if I even got in, only to go there the following fall! It's redic!

Med school stuff (it's okay if you don't want to read this): :D
I decided to apply to all (or almost all) DO schools in the county. There's only about 28 or so (there's a bagillion more MD schools. So, competition for MD may be known for being horrible, DO school is just as hard because there's about 1/3 as many schools (I can only imagine what the Vet poeple go through!)). My mom doesn't want me applying to "the bowels of mississippi" of any other southern/midwestern place because "they won't take to kindly to gay people." I whole-heartedly agreed.

There's about 5 schools in the area that are my top pick. First is probably UMDNJ (college of osteopathic medicine). This is in South Jersey. My main reason for wanting to go here is because it is known for being one of the best Med schools in the country (but probably not as good as Harvard or Yale or whatever). Also, the doctor I did my research with and followed a lot went there, and I guess you can say he's kind of like my mentor. Also, it's in Jersey and I would really prefer to practice in Jersey (despite the crazy mal-practice insureance).

MY second choice would be Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem. I would like to go here because, mainly, it's in New York! It's across from the famous Apollo Theatre, so I can see Monique every night! I always wanted to live in NY, but obviously not my entire life. It would be a way of my living in NY for between 2-4 years (depending on where I intern), which would be perfect! also, Touro is a jewish school (closed on Saturudays, and follows the jewish calender), and it's also extremely culturally diverse. You practice with a lot of minorities too. This is not only important for being a more well rounded person (especially because I grew up in a all-white town, and went to a predominetly white college), but also will expose to me different cultures and help me address them medically, which is incredibly important. PLus, training in Harlem will make sure I see the worst of the worst.

The next choice would be New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM). This is where that doctor I'm meeting on Friday went, and also where I went to the open house 2 months ago (Where I drove through Manhattan for the first time ever!). This school looked just like a regular college (because it's located on a college campus). It's out on staten island, so it's still pretty close, which is good. Their standards for picking students are very high (or so it sounded at the open house), but the students there were so friendly! I think I would fit in well at that school - I just got that feeling (kind of like I got at Drew).

The next would probably be Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. It's in Philly (duh), so it's still pretty close to home. I haven't done a lot of research on this school, but it's ranked up there because of distance to Jersey (Since I won't have much say in where I go, and more on who takes me, I rank mainly by distance).

The next would be New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. This school is located in Maine and is right at the shore line. The school even has a private island as part of it! I requested to brochure and it's really pretty and I could see myself going there. My brother is doing his rotations at St. Mike's (I think...some "M" name) for his PA and the interns he works with are all from this school. So, I could do my rotations near home! He got me one of there cards so I can e-mail him questions and stuff about the school. This school is the only one, so far, that requires biochem....and that's the main reason I'm taking it next year.

Next there is Lake Eerie College of Osteopathic Medicine in PA. I havn't doen research here yet. But it's still ranked up there for me because it's still in the North East!

There are more schools I'm looked harder into that aren't in the area (2 in Florida, 2 in California, and some by the great lakes, Virginia, and in "gay-friendly" states). I'm getting super excited about applying! I can potentially find out if I'm accepted as early as August (and as late January... sometimes even later if people defer or drop out)!

I know my MCAT scores aren't all that high (there lowish/average for DO school), and my GPA isn't as high as it should be (Thanks a lot, physics). But my A- in Orgo (Thanks Rosan!) should help me, as long as my work experience! I do have a lot of field work in Medicine (working in a hospital, being an EMT, starting a second job there, doing research with a doctor, shadowing multiple doctors (even once in middle school!), having published research already, and probably again in the future (once I finish the stats on the hospital one)). So, my field research is fantastic, and my letters ( from a DO, a high ranked nurse (I don't know her exact title), Dr. Knowles, Dr. Mckittrick, and maybe even a second DO) are (hopfully) amazing (I can't read them...it's some stupid rule thing). So, without the MCAT and the okay GPA, I'm good to go! The only problem is that the MCAT/GPA is used to weed out student the first round of applicants, then they go back to them later. That's why I have to apply super early!

Okay, enough writing, I gotta go do stuff.
