Hello, lovely Flisters.
It has come to my attention that I have to embark on a diagonal cross-country flight in slightly less than three weeks. Twelve hours going East, 14 coming home.
Whilst I now have a shiny new laptop upon which I am planning to horde fic, dl'ed tv and more, I will still have a significant amount of time to occupy without the aid of electronics. So I am soliciting recommendations, please and thank you.
I'm looking for some engaging plane reading. I tend not to be able to concentrate on super-complicated stories on long plane rides except, of course, when I am. Just to give you some parameters, on the last few cross-country trips, I managed to amuse myself with
King Dork, by Frank Portman,
The Final Solution and
The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon,
Gentleman and Players by Joanne Harris,
The Night Gardener by George Pelacanos, Barry Maitland's latest,
No Trace, and a couple of old
John D. McDonald mysteries.
What's your pick for some diverting, not-quite-Danielle Steele-level reading? Inquiring minds want to know.
And since we're talking about books, I thought I'd mention that both
David Foster Wallace and
Gregory McDonald, author of the Fletch books -- which were the basis for the Chevy Chase
movie -- died in the past few weeks. Of course, they were vastly different kinds of talents, but the world is sadder for both their passings.
