Background: Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei | And this character.
Personality: The main character of Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei is constantly depressed, pessimistic, suicidal, and is of course, constantly in despair. Kafuka Fuura on the other hand, is the complete opposite is that. Kafuka is a cheerful optimistic girl who has no problems seeing everything in a positive light. And by everything, I do mean everything; she considers someone hanging themselves to in fact be making themselves grow taller, and the action of stalking to be deep love. She's naturally naive, believing these things to be true and in fact, taking off handed statements from others (most likely her teacher) and turning them into a positive, no matter how negative the action may be. It's said that she has an uncanny ability to worm her way into one's heart because of this, as she's even able to come to the defense of someone who may have committed a wrong doing in their life.
That said, some negative things to her, simply don't exist and are things she's only seen on television; these would be things such as hikikkomoris (despite one of her classmates being one), stalkers (once again, one of her classmates), and comas (which her teacher has been in before). She's rather stubborn in this respect, as she will stick with her views of the world, regardless of the proof that's staring her into the face. This innocence is more of a hindrance to her in many ways, even to the point that if she's stuck in a situation that may lead to her death, she's certain that she'll be reborn as God in her next life, mostly due to a classic Buddhist tale.
Is she annoying to some? No doubt about it. In fact, that optimism of hers is easily the bane of Nozomu Itoshiki, her teacher's, existance. When placed against someone who's usually pessimistic and casts everything into a negative light, she'll easily attempt to shed her own positive light on their existance, like it or not. She also has a penchant for giving people (mainly the Itoshiki family itself) nicknames. She was the one who pointed out that her teacher's name spelled horizontally reads "despair" in kanji, and as a result, came Mr. Despair, or Zetsubou-sensei. These nicknames can be insulting or just playfully observant, but either way, she gives them out.
However, despite the smiles and laughter, something could lurk within. There have been hints to a somewhat unsettling side of Kafuka, in addition to her definite cheerful demeanor. When teaching a fellow student to communicate through eye contact, the other student happened to find murderous intent in this girl's. It would make sense, however given the hints at her past in which her father attempted to hang himself numerous times and her mother was at one point possessed by demons. Her cheerful state could be noted as her repressing her past (even though she DOES bring them up in relation to things happening around her, still in her ever cheerful manner), and given the bloodlust within her eyes, she could one day reach her breaking point and inevitably murder everyone around her. Which of course won't happen here, but it's worth mentioning.
Despite all that, what you see on the outside is mostly what you get with Kafuka. Her smiles and her unsettling positivity are always apparent, and there's never a time where you see her genuinely depressed or saddened about anything (unless it's in a dream, in which case it doesn't count). Her life may be dreadful and the entire world may horribly depressing, but she'll still find a way to smile throughout it all and keep on living, even if others want to throw away their lives.
Abilities: None at all, outside of her optimism and such.
