Ok, as a warning I'm totally geeking out here.
For quite some time I've had this theory about technology and human
society. Just think how much the computer has changed our society, I
think there's 4 other things that will cause just as much change.
1. Energy production. Something between the size of a refrigerator and
a bedroom that can safely, cleanly and dependably produce enough power
for a small farm.
2. Memory storage. 1 terabyte storage drives are fine, but we need
memory storage on the level of DNA (single text file with our entire
genome still takes up most of a terabyte at about 24 cubic inches
compared to a microscopic cell)
3. Energy storage. Batteries are too inefficient in weight versus
production. Even though they are constantly refining the technology, we
need something on an entire new level that's many order of magnitudes
better than what is currently available.
4. Wireless power. Just like data is transferred we need power to be
done the same way. And it is!
Read an article in popular mechanics and the technology is here and is
being fine tuned. Soon, power can be transferred through the house for
any appliance to pick up on. This will have a huge effect on society
once it's at the city level instead of just a house.
