[...Damnit, Lucifer. And both the words and the laughing are unsettling, but he shrugs it off and mostly pretends he doesn't know what Lucifer's talking about.]
Everyone is like this, it seems. It appears to be an event.
Though I believe it has skipped me, this time.
[Guess who still has the very few and weak things he retained after the grace incident?]
[If there's good opportunity, he indeed might, but right now he was telling the truth.
That comment, though, earns a look that's beyond incredulous.]
Of everything you have ever said, I believe that the least. I had done nothing yet and you still retaliated with the worst thing I possibly could imagine.
I thought you were against preemptive disciplinary action. It's a lot like what is done in Heaven. I distinctly remember you telling me you disagreed with such things.
[He really hadn't intended to talk to Lucifer this much or this seriously, but he had little to lose at this point.]
[And it's strange how this, out of everything anyone has said, strikes him the most. Without his 'angel brain' he can't stash reactions away, can't hide his emotions so easily. Can't look ahead to see what he should say.
So he defaults to bald honesty]
...You frightened us, Castiel. If you had ever given me the slightest reason to trust you, I would not have let them do what they did. But at every turn, you sought to oppose me. You broke our deal, you lied to me.
And yet--you're right. [Savor that, Castiel. He never says that.] I don't agree with the method, or the philosophy behind what we did to you. I can tell you that I did offer other suggestions, and none of them made things safer.
But I do regret that we hurt you. If I thought I could make things right, even give us somewhere new to start from...I would.
[He's still furious and depressed and not anywhere near about to let what was done just go, but he's extremely adaptable and for now, he's accepted it. So he can be quiet, and listen, and take in what Lucifer's saying.
It's strange, but he does realize that of all the threats and opponents he's had, Lucifer is really the only one he can hold a discussion with. He is also still a potentially useful ally, and if not that, then at least it would be beneficial for him not to be an enemy.]
I was trying to find a way to be certain I could protect those here. There are particular individuals I know you had specific interest in and despite our agreement, I didn't believe you would let them be.
[It was truthful, as he decides to match Lucifer's honesty with his own. He has no real reason to lie anymore anyway, with everything in the open and little investment in what might come of this information being public anyway.
The concession is a surprise, and it takes a moment before he can respond.]I understand the logic behind it, but I can't
( ... )
[He knows exactly what it is, of course. He just can't help rub it in a little, especially while Lucifer's powerless.]

Or don't. Lucifer laughs a little.]
Little brother, we become more alike every day. But you know that, don't you?

Lucky you. If you wanted, you could even have revenge on me.
Has it hit the others?
Reply
[You were downgraded long ago to second most important threat, Lucifer, despite the most recent encounter.]
It has hit Raphael. I don't know about the others.

I know you will probably not believe me, but I truly wish you no further harm, brother.

...I am sorry you had to learn that truth the way you have. The pain of losing faith in Him-- there is no way to describe it.

[He just shouldn't have made the mistake of changing his mind on it to begin with.]
