She had a boyfriend. Well, someone who could have been her boyfriend. And of course, her slaying just had to get in the way and screw it up. So he'd been stupid - most boys were, and she could've trained him... except that it would just result in him getting killed.
She is working out frustration, as she tends to, by practicing with weapons. She's doing it outside, rather than in the training room, because there's less chance of running into people out here.
And she's almost completely silent except for breathing slightly harder than usual, so JD probably wouldn't notice her until he got right up next to her. Unfortunately for JD, Buffy's practicing with a staff, since Giles has been insisting she work with more... "traditional" weapons. So by the time he gets close enough to hear her, he's close enough to be clocked with a big old piece of wood while Buffy's not paying attention.
JD let's out a noise that is a cross between a grunt and a scream as he topples backward in pain. He's so clumsy, and Buffy's so strong that when the two forces collide it makes for a pretty considerable fall.
"Owwwwww!" JD mutters, vaguely wondering what the hell hit him and then - "Oooh, sky is... pretty."
Buffy drops the staff as soon as it actually hits something (well, someone) and covers her mouth with her hands.
"Oh my God! JD, I'm so sorry, I didn't know you were there and..."
She kneels down next to him. If he's seeing stars, when his vision clears he's going to be faced with a very concerned little Slayer.
"Are you okay?"
Given that he just got hit by a weapon wielded by a Slayer, that may not be the brightest question, but it's one of those questions you just have to ask.
He recognizes her voice, before he sees her clearly. There are pretty stars in the sky or bright flashes of light or something that eventually clear away so that he can see her face.
Here's one - a girlfriend watching him pace from a few yards away. She doesn't exactly have the courage to go talk to him, but if he happens to notice her and come over...
Well, she misses him. And she's got a little fessing up to do.
JD takes a moment to convince himself not to run away screaming, and then turns toward her, with a goofy wave.
He walks toward her quickly, channeling that nervous energy into a bouncy step, but when he reaches her... he's at a loss of what to say, and his feet stop moving so all that nervous energy rushes back to his head.
"Hey," April says faintly, her arms wrapped protectively around herself. She can't bring herself to look him in the eye, or even come close, so she just looks down at her bare feet and her chipped toenail polish.
"Um... I just... I'm sorry. A-about the other day."
"So am I." JD admits, and frowns when he sees that she won't meet his gaze. "I mean, I could've dealt with the whole situation better, instead of jumping to all those conclusions. I could've given you some time or something. I was... am just worried, s'all."
