JD is hanging out downstairs, staring into the fire, and biting on his thumb nail, nervously. There's a bruise on his chin a la Ben, that he's trying not to touch or think about for that matter.

He looks up and notices Steve immediately. The expression on his face hurts to see, but it's also... very familiar. The pain that throbs in his heart is a familiar one.

"Steve?" JD heads over to him. "Are you okay?"

Steve glances over at JD and smiles. Well, really, the corners of his mouth turn up the tiniest bit, for a split second. He still looks ready to cry, though. "Not really," he admits. Steve's never been one to lie if he doesn't have to. "But there's not much I can do about it."

JD's expression becomes concerned. He swallows, tilting his head to the side and placing his hand on Steve's shoulder.

"What happened?"

"I just realized I'm an idiot," he says quietly, not looking at JD. "Spending two years of my very short life expectancy pining over someone who... really doesn't give a shit anymore."

He shakes his head. "I'm never gonna get him back. That's the only thing that's really kept me going... thinking maybe... maybe today, it'll be different. Today, he'll change his mind, and he'll come back. Today, I'll tell him how much I love him, ask him why he left, convince him it was a mistake." He pauses for a moment. "Well I did tell him. And I did ask. And I tried to change his mind, and it didn't work. I just... made an idiot of myself."

Sue can tell him Gordon still has feelings for him 'till the cows come home - he has no reason to believe that's true.
