[For Robb]

Nov 17, 2008 23:00

It had seemed an idea at the time - Robin had been to the second island more times than he could count now, and he liked being part of the Dawn Treader's crew. The second island wasn't large but it still seemed like it should offer more possibility than it did - even if merely a different hunting ground. As fond as Robin was of adventure he was ( Read more... )

"She looks uncommonly like my lady wife," Robb says, "which is strange enough." And like someone he had known, if briefly--a lady well loved by a man he had thought highly of, when Will Turner was still here. "It's handy to have another boat."

"She reminds me of someone I used to be close to," Robin admits, he uses past tense as much to convince himself as anything else. "Not in looks," he clarifies. "More the temper." But Robb's point is well made. "I don't think an island can have too many - though most islands you could sail away from. I wonder if either of the wrecks are salvageable?"

"I wouldn't know what to do with them if they were," Robb admits. "The North doesn't really make for sailors. But I'm sure if there's something to be done with them, all the would-be shipwrights on the main island will manage it somehow."

Robin wouldn't know either but it would never stop him having a look. "It would be good if this place yielded something useful," he said. "But if there is such, we shall merely have to find it." Or perhaps it will merely be slightly more effort for a hunting trip than is normally required.

"Stumble upon it, most likely," Robb says wryly. "One never seems to find just what you're looking for, in this place. If you're even lucky enough to know what that is."

"This place is full of surprises," Robin agreed, or at least the other island was and they - or he presumed it was a trait that would carry over. The vegetation at least was similar.

"With any luck," Robb says, and isn't even joking, "they'll be dangerous surprises that require some exercise of the sword-arm. Peace is wonderful, but that doesn't mean it doesn't get boring."

If Robin thought this was an unusual sentiment for a father to be, he kept it to himself for it was an sentiment he much agreed with. "You realise of course you are jinxing us," he told Robb with a grin. "You can't go out looking for danger, you have to want a nice peaceful hunting trip or for everything to go smoothly. That's when danger strikes."

"Well--not too dangerous," Robb admits with a grin. "Or have I jinxed us again, then?"

Robin affects a serious air, "almost certainly. See if I go exploring with you again," he can't keep it up and he claps Robb on the shoulder. "We'll have to see won't we."

Robb grins at him. "I'll have you remember, you volunteered for this!"

"That might counteract the jinx," Robin said musing on the topic, "there are few things I volunteer for that don't end up involving danger."

"Now remember," Robb says cautiously, "should you ever speak about all this to my lady wife, I was not courting danger, or hoping for it. Just a peaceful expedition."

"I would never say otherwise," Robin assures him, "it would obviously be churlish slander of the most untruthful nature." He considers. "You could always blame the wolf," he looks hopefully at Grey Wind - as if might rustle them up something dangerous.

Grey Wind turns his head to look at Robin as if he knows he's being talked about, and trots off with his tail in the air.

"Or not," Robb says wryly.

Robin shrugs carelessly. "Should we follow him then or is that likely only to lead to hunting." Robin likes hunting but there is plenty of that on the original island.
