Twitter

Granted,
jwz is a curmudgeon (and I love him for it), but following the buzz, talking to
pkos today, and watching
jerronimo's LJ, I had to chuckle at this post.  For the record:

  • I use IRC and Jabber (Google Talk) daily for work (both via pidgin), and before we blocked it at work, that included AIM and Yahoo.
  • I have an arguably rehab-worthy "addiction" to reading Atom / RSS feeds (though also arguably, it's the most efficient way I've found of consuming news and entertainment; via liferea).
  • Like the post above (and many of the comments), I have yet to "get" Twitter.  It seems like it's a great idea for an SMS-only thing, but I don't have a qwerty keyboard on my phone (which makes sending messages a pain) and I don't want to be bothered by trivia on it throughout the day (that's what pidgin is for).  So count me out (though, yes apparently I could follow via IM...  I still don't get it.)
  • I find the Twitter-to-blog aggregation tools to be mystifying and slightly annoying.  (No offense to
jerronimo intended; it's easy enough to ignore.)  But I will admit that I found
    jwz's grumpiness about it amusing.
  • Probably something will push me to register for an account, and I'll try it, and still be underwhelmed, and a year from now I'll reactivate it because all my friends are using it.  And I'll still find it a waste of my time.  (See previously: MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tribe, and Friendster.  Though it's possible I'm just late to the party and behind the curve -- See LJ and IM, which I resisted just as strongly at first.)
Updated: And from the other side, from someone I respect just as much (but who's much more upbeat):

this is why i love twitter
Look, Twitter haters: Don't make a fuss! I'll have your Twitter. I love it! I'm having Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Baked Beans, Twitter and Twitter.
When smart people feel passionately about something, especially when it polarizes them, I know there's something worth paying attention to.  It pegs my "There Something To Be Learned Here" meter.  (/me is a whore for learning.  I still don't get it, but I'll be listening...  :-)
