The Eowyn Challenge

Nov 17, 2008 09:03

I know several of you on my flist are doing WW and are trying to get healthier through exercise or diet and exercise.  I am too, but the thing for me is it has to be fun or I'll eventually stop doing it, so I go around looking for fun ways to exercise.

I've been hitting the exercise bike in the morning because it is my most available time, but it is pretty boring and I really dislike lifting weights by myself.  I"ve been trying to walk at least 1 mile every day around campus.  Since I'm here 8 hours a day, I might as well do something constructive as well as work.  Beside, by the end othe day I'm ready chew someone's arm off if I don't get out and move and my student works value all their appendages.

In the interest of fun, I have found this awesome web page http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchallenge/.  Even though this was started back in 2003 when TRoTK was being made, folks are still participating in it today.  I really like The Lord of the Rings book and movie and it is pretty cool to see how my exercise mileage compares to Frodo and Sam's journey.  It is also fun way to keep track of how much I actually walk and ride my exercise bike.  I've covered 16 miles by riding twice and walking 3 times in the past week.  I hope to include my rollerblades soon.  Pretty cool, but Frodo, Merry, Pippen, and Sam covered 18 miles the first day going from Hobbiton to Rivendale.  I'm moving a bit slower then they.

I have signed up to do the Walk to Rivendale and joined the yahoo group because they are very active and it gives me people to talk to that are doing the same thing.  They have a mini-challenge going on for part of November.  But, there are no local people in the group.

Are any of you local folks interested in doing this with me?  Maybe we can get together one Saturday a month and hit one of the walking trails?

Even if you're not interested, check out the web page, it is pretty cool.  You get a shield next to your name for every 25 miles that you complete.  There is a goals section and you can keep track of your milage there too.

Aragorn - "What do you fear my lady?" Éowyn - "A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire. Aragorn - "You are a daughter of Kings! A Shieldmaiden of Rohan! I do not think that will be your fate" The Lord of the Rings: The TwoTowers

For many of us, our weight, health and/or self-esteem have felt like cages, and we have decided to break free. We encourage everyone to make a fitness/health goal to reach during our Challenge dates or choose your own Challenge dates based on the Middle Earth events.  The Challenge brought us together while awaiting the release of The Return of the King in theaters, but anyone can take the Éowyn Challenge anytime.
