Unless my gaydar is mistaken, I'm pretty sure that the guy who's been playing Jesus Christ for the past 17 years in one of the Lenten plays here in the city is gay. I didn't asked him directly (hey, I just met him); I gathered this from his mannerisms and the way he reacted when I asked him if he's got a wife and kids. None, he replied to the question, and then he gave that you're-asking-me-that? look. And the girl who's playing the Virgin Mary looked as if she was embarassed for me. Ok, ok, I get it. Anyhow, I thought he rocks.
The Lesbians, by the way, were absolutely thrilled with the concept of a gay, ex-junkie Christ. (The latter description was a volunteered information.) Eleyn asked, But does it bother the community to know that their Jesus Christ is gay? Hmm. I don't think so. Apparently, he's got fans. After the play, our JC is usually mobbed by members of the audience who want to touch his robe, as if he's a miraculous relic. Our Virgin Mary seconded this. Our JC is, God bless him, is embarrassed by all the adoration and the misplaced devotion. I ain't a saint, he told me. But for a week, he's a superstar.
