First Time Living Alone

Hi, my name is Allie and I'm new to this community. Yesterday, my husband walked out on me, taking our daughter and dog, and my son has decided to move in with a friend as the whole divorce thing is upsetting him badly. I will be sharing a three-bedroom apartment with a woman I met at an apartment-sharing website; I will be getting one bedroom, some space to put furniture in the living room, and enough room in bedroom #3 to put in a bed for kids' visits.

And here's my problem: I currently live in a 6-bedroom house [2 of them were used as studies], with a big basement and living/dining area and I simply don't know how to put in what I need in a half a living room and a medium-sized bedroom that will not make everything impossibly cluttered. I don't have any budget for decorating, just using stuff that I've had for years [which is in good condition], and I'll need an extra quilt on the top of my bed as I no longer have a warm body to sleep next to.

I have a double bed, bedtable, dresser, standing fan [the sound is necessary for me or I can't sleep], bookshelving - an absolute essential, a desk that doesn't match the rest of the furniture, and assorted wall art, and all kinds of ornamental stuff that I've collected over the 48 years I've been alive. I'm hoping that a new quilt will add a jolt of colour to my room, but I have no idea how to pack up one life and move into a much, much smaller other life, if we're looking at living space.

I'm not even sure I'm allowed to post this thread, so please remove it if I've broken community rules, as I say, I'm brand new. But I was hoping to get some ideas about how to maximize space so that I am not having to store or sell everything I own, and can have my comfortable favourites around me. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.
