The Government seized
Freddie and Fannie thus making them the 2nd and 3rd mortgage finance companies (along with Bear Stearns) to be bailed out by the American tax-payer. What's worse is these companies were going under for practicing bad and probably immoral business techniques (see sub-prime lending).
I also read today that
American automakers are asking Congress for a $50 billion loan (hand out) to update their factories and provide fuel-efficient cars. Again these corporations are in trouble because of their own actions. Hmmmm... GM, Ford, Chrysler... etc. maybe instead of greedily tapping into the faux-machismo monster truck suburban soccer mom American psyche, you should have been focusing on fuel-efficiency and environmentally friendly vehicles like your foreign competitors.
The message to take away from this is when you're powerful and wealthy enough the government has your back. So any time some pompous blow hard scoffs at "underachievers" and social programs, or tries to sell you on the importance of the "free market," I suggest you laugh in their fucking face. 'Cause you'll know it's all bullshit.
