This is an entry about two weekends ago, as the events to be described were the inspiration for this entire weblog...
We shall begin with the tales of Friday night, the 17th. Rough weeks had been had by many of us, so four intrepid journeyers (Ben Freeman, Rick, Lauren and myself) decided at around MIDNIGHT that we needed to stretch our legs and explore. So we went to the next town that had a Denny's, with the mission of visiting every Denny's in the state eventually. Ben drove us in his new ride the ~45 minutes to Lebanon. We went there looking to find comedic locals and a rural Denny's setting, but instead were met with the Ritz Carlton of all Denny's. We walked in, and felt very underdressed for the occasion in our jeans and random t-shirts. It was approaching 1 AM, and we had food and desserts and lots of joking (generally lifting the ruckus level of the entire place by a factor of a million cause hardly anyone was in there to watch anyway!). Then we paid, I won a free meal out of the water-coin trick jar, and we headed out. We stopped at Meijer in the WL at about 3 for me to get cereal, and then we all got home around 3:30. :)
The story of Saturday night is a story that'll describe to you why I will never go to Kokomo again. Or... at least not for a month or so. Anyway...
It began at around 11, when I rustled up random people again to road trip with me to the next town that had a Denny's, just an hour down 26... in Kokomo. I got a full carload for Yoshi: Lauren again, my bro, KevinR "OK", and Randy. The trip started from WL at midnight, with a rousing "Skywarn Spotter" performance...
Driving through all the small towns, we quickly realized that Sat night on that road was cop-hell. I really had to mind my Ps and Qs as we saw SEVERAL people pulled over. So we get to Kokomo around 1, and discover... that the Denny's is SUPPOSED to closed for renovations Sunday at 2 PM, but it was closed already. Crushing, no??? SO we made our way next door, with some drunk locals, to the Steak 'n Shake. It was incredibly busy, with the Denny's overflow, and there was one tall old guy serving ALL the people. We waited 10 mins to be seated, then just sat at some tables in front that had balloons but were empty. The manager lady came out right away and promised we'd be served quicky, and the guy moseyed over. He scared us at first, but he ended up being cool, in a creepy and awkward kinda way. So, some good stuff was ordered, and Kevin sucked helium, which was COMICAL. It was one of those nights where u just do crazy stuff, learn more about people through frustration + exhaustion = insanity +laughter... :-D I got picked on a lot. Shock!!!
Then the real adventure began. Coming home. Driving back onto 26 and leaving Kokomo, Kev said something snide from the back seat. I had only one thing I could do, of course, in flipping him off and holding it for a sec, impersonating an Office Space scene. Then in the back seat, the guys all start cracking up, saying "You just flipped off a cop!". I was like... riiight, sure, and saw nobody close behind me. Then I looked again 30 secs later... aaand there was a cop, right on my @$$. Thinking "oh, no", I busted out the cruise at the speed limit... and got a county mounty escort alllll the way out of his county of jurisdiction. Whew, there's me makin friends. THEN I noted how beautiful the stars were, how clear the atm was that night, and how we were in the freaking boondocks... so it was 2:37 AM, and everyone readily agreed to star gaze. We turned down 30W, the first country bumpkin road we found (single-lane, unpaved), and went down till the tree lines cleared, close to a house ahead of us. The stars were so clear, we could even see the Milky Way galaxy stripe the sky. THEN we heard this blood-curdling scream of some animal ahead by the house, and jumped back into the car, fearing a pack of wild dying somethings. The guys made us get out again, saying we'd be fine together... then we saw lights up ahead on the road. I knew if the car was speeding it wouldn't see my car till it was too late if I didn't start my car again, so I did... and the lights stopped behind this little hill ahead of us. We decided we needed to get back off the road, so the guys convinced me to pull into the drive of the house ahead, and turn around. I did that... and saw the SUV that'd caused the light. As soon as I made the move to turn around, the car came to life, and SPED down the road behind us... and disappeared into the corn. Yeah, ok, so we left, significantly freaked out. More cops all the way home... all prolly looking for me... definitely no speeding occurring, except MY HEART RACING FROM SUGAR, COFFEE, AND THIS :-p lol.
What a weekend, eh??
