So it turns out that what I had thought was a remote worst-case scenario is actually the case - the bone around the root of my tooth is deteriorating. The treatment is dental surgery (scheduled for September) in which they cut the gum where the hole in the bone is, reach in and cut off the end of the root.
The problem is apparently the little nerves at the end which are too small to be removed in a root canal. They are dead now and getting all festery and the bone doesn't like the smell so it moves away. Or something like that. Once the end of the root is gone, the bone is supposed to come back (PLEASE OH PLEASE).
In summation, we are not amused.
