This entry is written on-my newest toy-- a secondhand Palm IIIIxe. I had for many years thought that the whole Palm platform was a waste of time. But I found myself looking for a cheap way to enter text while I.was doing other things, like riding the train to work ( Read more... )

I almost missed this entry. I avoided palm for years, now I've become a fairly heavy user and have co-opted my wife into it. I mainly use my Palm (Sony Clie S-320) for reading RSS feeds and downloaded stories. I also have a keyboard and use it for many more typical Palm things (grocery lists, address books, games, etc.).

I actually prefer the older Palms for the better battery life and more rugged design. Plus if I toast one, I can always pick one up from ebay for $30. Using rfbackup to backup occasionally to my memory stick, and backing that up to my computer whenever I sync, I could lose the whole shebang and still be okay.

I have a Sony Clie TJ-37 which has a very nice screen and Wifi and all sorts of things. But I don't use it because it's more fragile and a little heavier. Also it's covered with buttons that make it come on by itself. :-/

I've found that the only apps I can find, reliably for PalmOS 3.5.x are Free Software; all the proprietary stuff that is compatible with that version of PalmOS...well, it's gone.

Funny how an old device can make you GNU.

Incidentally, do you know anything about aliasing /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/pilot using udev? All the howtos out there assume USB connections....and I"d really like to be able to just specify /dev/pilot .
