Challenges, pt. 5: Speculative Fiction and Fantasy - finished

Jan 02, 2010 17:18

Some overlap possible between these two, though I intend on the Spec. Fic. being more SF or near future or alternate history. Fantasy is fantasy :) Going for the obsessed level in both. (Edited to add: since I've finished the fantasy list, I'm just going to add the other fantasy books to the Spec. list)

Speculative fiction: (24) - finished Oct. 2010
1. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - dystopian future
2. The Breach by Patrick Lee - SF thriller
3. The God Engines by John Scalzi - dark fantasy in a SF setting
4. The Dragon Factory by Jonathan Maberry - mystery, horror, genetic manipulation
5. Breathless by Dean Koontz - thriller, evolutionary leaps

10. Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth - fantasy/horror/alternate history - the Executive Branch has a vampire.
11. Bullet by Laurell K. Hamilton - urban fantasy
12. The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris - urban (rural) fantasy - counting the whole series as 1.
13. Changes by Jim Butcher - urban fantasy.
14. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison - urban fantasy.
15. Crimes By Moonlight - short stories with an urban fantasy bent by mystery writers.
16. Masked By Moonlight by Nancy Gideon - urban fantasy.
17. Death's Excellent Vacation - short stories, urban fantasy dealing with vacations.
18. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - dystopian future, final book in trilogy.
19. Just Another Judgement Day by Simon R. Green - noir fantasy.
20. Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie - romantic suspense ghost story with humor.
21. Black Blade Blues by J.A. Pitts - urban fantasy - Dragons, dwarves, Norse magic and a lesbian blacksmith with a magic sword.
22. From Hell With Love by Simon R. Green - sort of James Bond-ish, urban fantasy-ish - current world mixed with strange matter, demons, fairies, immortals and a snarky hero, kind of like Harry Dresden, but I believe Green was writing before Butcher - also with a British flavor as they're set in England.
23. The Crowded Shadows by Celine Kiernan - more traditional type of fantasy - set in a medieval world but not Arthurian - excellent writing, female protagonist, conspiracies, cultural clashes, swords, romance, lots of gray area 'good vs. evil'. Second in the series. First is #20 below. Waiting on library to get vol. 3 processed.
24. The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett - fantasy - brutal action, conspiracy, culture clash, demons, magic - awesome. Sequel to The Warded Man/The Painted Man.
