Alright, folks. You, my varied and fantabulous group of LJ friends, can come to the rescue of a horribly stuck-inside-his-box otterdoc. :)
I’m shopping very soon for tires and/or rims for my
car with two things in mind:
1. I need winter tires.
2. I want bitchin cool rims and new tires for summer. (My current M68 rims are nifty but I’m not married to them.)
Added information: Rear wheel drive car. I’m currently running a staggered sport setup on my 17” rims with 7.5” front and 8.5” rear widths. I’m not opposed to changing this up for a nifty set of rims that are all the same width, but I don’t know if I should go with 8” all around or what. How does tire width affect performance? Will I notice a difference in my everyday driving, which is spirited but not heavyduty? Bear in mind horrible Michigan roads with potholes. I can’t go to ultralight rims that aren’t durable as hell. I’m not opposed to going up in size, either, to 18” rims with staggered or uniform width. Again, aside from weight dropping takeoff speed, performance differences? I know I have to alter tire profile a bit with bigger wheels, too, to avoid screwing up other things on the car. I DO NOT want to go with huge pimp rims that are going to slow my car down and rub and so on. I also wouldn’t be opposed to keeping my current set of rims for summer driving (Which are fine with me, and I can get the tires replaced just fine as needed), and selecting a set of cheaper winter rims and winter tires. In which case, what width and size? I know that narrower tires are better in snow, but we mostly have dry roads in winter, here. Very few days out of the year are truly snowcovered roads, so I’d like to get some performace out of the tires as well. I know full well I won’t get the ultra high performance summer feel with the car -- that’s fine. As was astutely pointed out, if I’m not careful I’ll be driving a little silver frisbee. :) Anyway, fuck...somebody who knows about this could realllllly help me out. I’ve been playing with all kinds of configurations on
tirerack.com, which is fun, but not helpful aside from thinking “THOSE look like shit.” I’m hoping I can get some freaking nifty BMW OEM rims at some point, too. I like
these. I’m not sure if OER are okay or not. Risky? Which begs the question of keeping the current staggered 17s for winter tires and then paying out hyooge cash in the spring for rims and tires. Problem is that I have a set of good front 7.5 tires now and need to replace the rear 8.5s like NOW. So I’ll have new staggered tires for summer performance...and then I’m stuck buying rims and maybe 2 tires? Argh. ;P I’m trying not to waste money or get stuck trying to sell and ship used tires. Pain inna arse!
So, yeah, that’s today’s project. I pretty much have to go order the replacement rear tires on Tuesday so I can get them on the car.
