So, all my friends have been spammed by me and joined the debate about the M4A1 versus the M4.
Now it's your turn!!
The main point of debate is as follows:
The M4A1 has a "S-1-F" (safe/semi-automatic/fully automatic) trigger group, while the M4 has a "S-1-3" (safe/semi-automatic/3-round burst) trigger group.
Here is my problem. I have done a shitload of research on weaponry for rpg information, writing resources, as well as personal edification.
Primarily, in so far as researching for use by characters in RPGs, I have found that I prefer a weapon with a 3-round-burst. Full auto is awesome for Bruckheimer movies, but the real life applications are more limited in my opinion. The biggest problem being conservation of ammunition.
I mean, part of the reason why the M4 and M4A1 are so ideally suited to special operations units is their maneuverability in close quarters combat. To which I think full-auto is not well suited. I mean.. give me burst anyday. Both for the fact that you're likely to suffer from less friendly fire problems as well as ammunition conversation, as previously stated. Beyond that - let's say you're a Delta guy, you've got mad skillz. If you can't tap someone out with a 3-round-burst and you have to use full auto... what the fuck is wrong with you? I mean.. yes, full auto has its advantages in certain situations, but I just don't think it should be the standard multi-round shot for a spec ops groups primary assault rifle.
In short (I know, too late) I prefer the original M4 carbine to the updated M4A1.
Personal opinions, my fellow gun bunnies?
(Side note? The SOPMOD accessory kit for the M4 is sweeeeeeet... Just sayin')
