A random fiber update

So much for regular fiber updates (other than the recent dying pictures)! I have, however, been doing fiber related stuff, but some of it just takes a long time to get anywhere and what's the point of show pictures where progress is, well, not obvious?

At last year's (2010) Maryland sheep and wool, I bought a batt of blue wool with silver flash carded into it. Earlier this year I spun it into a lace weight/fingering weight two ply yarn:

I decided I was tired of knitting sock and wanted a bit more of a challenge and so decided to knit a lace scarf. Lace, however, can't be knit while watching or even listening to the TV. So this didn't start off so well. Once I finally learned my lesson, the knitting moved from negative territory to glacially slow. (I'm am most definitely not a fast knitter.)

Yesterday, the scarf came off the needles and was blocked! It's plenty long to wrap around the neck, but not so heavy as to feel you're being choked.

And here's a close-up:

Despite the learning curve, that was worth the effort. I've had my eye on a lace vest and when I wasn't knitting or weaving, I was spinning this yarn from some fiber I bought from Maryland Sheep and Wool this year.

Yes...that is a gauge swatch at the bottom. Theoretically, this is enough yarn for a vest. I have my doubts, but I also have plenty more of the fiber left if I need it. (Of course, it will probably take me until spring to actually discover whether I spun enough yarn or not.)
