Communal Story Telling

So, I was a nerd in high school.

"HOW NERDY WERE YOU!"

I was so nerdy that when I decided to do tabletop gaming, we didn't even use dice. We populated a forum on the internet and told stories about our characters back and forth.

That's right. I was so nerdy that not even the D&D crowd would touch me. (Tho to be fair, I did end up doing some tabletop games. With dice. Homebrew style. So, you know. I was cool. Really.)

Still, working as we did in such a small group, we ended up in a position where we cared more about the story than individual characters. We seemed to realize instinctually that we needed to tell the larger story rather than the individual stories alone. Or, put another way, we had to tell a larger story by interweaving the smaller narratives that we were creating.

And frankly? It was pretty awesome. It's something that I've never really been able to find since then.

I dunno. I just find myself missing that tonight.
