Another glowing indicator of the effects of post 9/11 American policy can be found
here. A man I greatly respect had this to say about the results from Cornell University:
"According to a recent poll conducted by Cornell University, 44% of Americans polled believe that the civil liberties of Muslim Americans should be ‘restricted’. Even more worrisome is that an estimated 27% of those polled believe that Muslim-Americans should be made to ‘register’ where they live with the government, 22% support racial profiling to determine potential terrorist threats, and 29% believe that Muslim civic and volunteer organizations should be infiltrated so that they can be monitored.
One has to wonder if, in the years to come, Muslim Americans will be forced to wear the Crescent on their jackets and find themselves restricted to certain trades. Perhaps Muslim intellectuals will be forced to resign their positions or, perhaps, Muslim Americans will simply disappear to some location from which they will never return.
In a nation that purports to exist to guarantee the rights of its citizens from persecution, to protect their right to a public voice and the freedom of faith, how can any one American believe that another’s liberties should be restricted?
While the exterior advertises a vast land of liberty and opportunity, the festering insides contrive secret assemblages, such as that run by the CIA in Cuba, or the now infamous halls of Abu Ghraib. I would put forth the notion that all is no longer what it seems - if only the truth weren’t that it never was." --
