6. Family

Family matters, too.

Neither Oshitari’s parents nor Gakuto’s parents take the news very well.

Gakuto’s parents disapprove.

Oshitari’s parents also disapprove.

Gakuto’s father is more than a little upset. He has always had problems with his son’s dyed hair, girly hairstyle, smart mouth, stubborn nature, gymnastics talent, trouble with grades-the list goes on. About the only thing that Gakuto’s ever done right, in his father’s eyes, is to be part of the Hyoutei tennis regulars, and even then, his father can’t stand the arrogance of the team.

Gakuto’s father has also never liked Oshitari Yuushi from the moment he saw him. Gakuto was in junior high when he brought Oshitari home once for dinner. Oshitari had beautiful, polished manners. Oshitari had a very nice voice and a very nice laugh. Oshitari was clearly very sensible and appeared to have an Intelligence Quotient of 200. Oshitari was patient and good-tempered. Oshitari excelled in both his studies and in sports. The whole Mukahi family-except Gakuto’s father-adored Oshitari Yuushi. Gakuto’s father couldn’t figure out at that time why he didn’t like Oshitari. Now he knows. Perhaps all those years ago, deep down inside, Gakuto’s father had somehow guessed that Oshitari Yuushi would one day steal his son away from him forever.

Gakuto’s mother is upset beyond belief. She wants to know if this is yet another fashionable trend that her idiotic son is following. If so, she doesn’t have the time to indulge him. She’s already weathered his cranberry-red hair, his penchant for gymnastics-with-tennis and his taking a gap year in university to act in musical theatre, for pity’s sake. If her boy is going to take up with Oshitari, then she wants them affianced and married, so that Gakuto can’t just change his mind as and when he likes. Living together is just not going to cut any ice with her!

Oshitari’s father is furious. He remembers Gakuto vaguely from the times Gakuto stayed for sleepovers at the Oshitari home: a small boy with cranberry-red hair and a clear, straightforward gaze. Oshitari’s father, strangely enough, has always had a very good opinion of Gakuto. He appreciates Gakuto’s honesty; he thinks that his son is lucky to have a friend like Gakuto, someone who is so forthright that you can trust him to tell you the truth, always, and you know for certain where you stand with him. Oshitari’s father is, however, very worried that Gakuto is an impressionable young man who has been led off the path of the straight and narrow by his bigger, handsomer, more intelligent son. He tries to explain his concern in a gentle, fatherly sort of manner to Gakuto, and has no idea why Gakuto doesn’t understand what he’s talking about.

Oshitari’s mother is, to put it simply, perturbed. She prides herself on knowing her son very well. That, after all, is what mothers do best. What she has trouble with is why her tall, handsome, dreamboat of a son has picked Gakuto. She can tell that he’s really serious about Gakuto-to the extent of giving Gakuto his grandmother’s ring. Now, she likes Gakuto a lot. She thinks he’s adorable and she loves his sense of style. But she can’t quite understand it. After all, Yuushi has always been devoted to beautiful girls. His past girlfriends have all been lovely, willowy types. Gakuto, well, doesn’t really fit that type. He’s very nice-looking, to be sure-if he were her son, she’d be really proud of him. But for the moment, Oshitari’s mother is finding it terribly difficult to wrap her mind around the fact that her son likes beautiful boys, too.

In short, the parents are united in their disapproval-and so the road ahead for Oshitari and Gakuto promises to be long and bumpy.
