I actually find the idea of differences in chain bookstores to be hilarious. For example, I have a Books-A-Million and a fucking ginormous Barnes and Noble in Tuscaloosa.
Now, one would expect, given that BAM generally has a fuckton of Christian-themed materials, and entire section on bibles, and whatnot, that I would generally shop at BN. Nope, the buyer at BN doesn't like romance novels, and therefore has a romance section a little larger than the local Walmarts (Note: the BN in Hoover, 40 minutes away, does not suffer from this problem).
By comparison, the BAM has a ginormous romance section, a ginormous SF/fantasy section, a large graphic novel section, and a big-ass craft books section, in addition to its Christian lit and bible-mania. Because the main buyer actually understands the local demographic very well. Also, their employees are friendlier.
Point I was getting at: a) sounds like the Borders you went to has an incompetent buyer who doesn't get why they should have a famous local author and b) the same buyer doesn't get that paranormal romance/adventure novels are fucking huge right now in both the scifi/fantasy and romance genres.
