summary: Shinji and Kamio cause a disturbance.
notes: More of the mixfic. Song this time is There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet by Panic! At the Disco. Love to goldie for looking this over for me!

I'm wrecking this evening already and loving every minute of it
Ruining this banquet for the mildly inspiring and
When you're in black slacks with accentuating off-white pinstripes, whoa-oh
Everything goes according to plan

Fudomine's regulars milled around awkwardly, all dressed in suits that were far too small (when had they grown so much? Kamio remembered the last time this suit fit; it really hadn't been that long ago. Now it was pulling across his shoulders and the sleeves barely covered the spidery veins and strangely delicate-looking bones at his wrists) and feeling more out of place than they thought was possible, considering the dinner party was in their honor. When it was announced that Fudomine had qualified for Nationals, Tachibana-buchou's sister had decided they needed to celebrate, and put together a fancy dinner in the banquet room of a nice restaurant.

No one had the heart to tell her they would be much happier in jeans, eating hamburgers and not feeling like they had to behave. As it was, Kamio's mother kept coming over to fuss with his hair, insisting that really, if she could just put in this bobby-pin it wouldn't fall over his eye all the time, and wouldn't that be nice?

Kamio sighed, moving over to the corner where Shinji stood, quite contentedly carrying on a conversation with himself. Leaning against the wall, Kamio closed his eyes and let Shinji's mumblings wash over him.

"I really hope there is good food tonight, I know sometimes at functions like these everyone expects good food and then there isn't, and then they all pretend not to be disappointed because they're supposed to be celebrating, but really this isn't all that fun, I wish we didn't have to behave so nicely and wear these suits and talk to each other's parents...this is so boring, there's nothing to do but stand around and talk, and I don't like talking so much--oh, Akira's next to me. Why is he laughing? I bet Akira would have more fun here if they played music so he could dance, but there aren't any girls here to dance with, except An-chan, but she's dating Momoshiro from Seigaku, and he already doesn't like Akira, so that probably wouldn't be a good idea, but Akira would probably be happy just dancing by himself because he does that often enough anyway, and I think I would have more fun too if there were music because I like watching Akira dance; he always looks like he's having so much fun, I wish I could move like that outside of a tennis court, and--oh, we're going somewhere..."

Shinji's ramble had given Kamio an idea, and he grabbed the still talking boy's arm, leading them to an open corner of the room. He bowed ostentatiously, grinning and offering Shinji his hand.

"May I have this dance?"

Shinji stopped talking. He blinked twice, glanced around. No one was watching. He took Kamio's hand, smiling.

As the two boys started to dance, Kamio hummed softly, giving them a rhythm. Shinji thought the song sounded familiar; he'd probably heard Kamio playing it before. Sighing, Shinji let himself be led in a light, swaying dance, not saying anything because he wanted to hear the song perfectly. Kamio pulled him a little closer, speeding up their dance, and Shinji thought that this might look strange to other people, but he didn't care because this was the first time he had ever danced with Akira, and Shinji didn't want to mess it up by worrying about other people not liking it.

Slowly, the other occupants of the banquet hall began to notice the two boys dancing in the corner. Their teammates weren't all that surprised, and An-chan's reaction was to squeal excitedly and grab her camera, but the adults in the room seemed to feel that something was amiss, and before they reached the end of the song, Ishida's mother came over, tapping Kamio firmly on the shoulder.

"Ahem," she cleared her throat. "Just what are you two boys doing?"

"Dancing," Kamio replied, arching his visible eyebrow challengingly.

"Well," the imposing woman replied, "you're causing a disturbance."

"I don't see how just dancing can be such a problem. We weren't even that close to each other. Anyway, Akira likes An-chan, he doesn't like me like that, we're just friends, so I think it's perfectly okay for us to dance, and we weren't in anyone's way, or being loud, so this really shouldn't be a problem..." Kamio cut Shinji off with a hand on his arm.

"Anyway, why should two boys dancing together cause a disturbance?" Kamio asked, stepping threateningly toward the woman.

"It's entirely inappropriate," she replied, blustering.

"I'll show you entirely inappropriate," Kamio muttered, smirking, as he grabbed Shinji and kissed him hard, practically shoving his tongue into Shinji's startled mouth. It took a moment for Shinji to react, but when he did he wrapped himself enthusiastically around Kamio, giving back as good as he got. Their teammates raised eyebrows and shrugged; this wasn't all that unexpected. An-chan hyperventilated and ended up on the floor.

Kamio hadn't expected that kissing Shinji would feel so incredibly good, but he supposed he shouldn't be all that surprised. After all, he'd always found Shinji somewhat attractive, though he'd never really given thought to his observations, and he wasn't one to let the question of gender be a barrier to his enjoyment of kissing. From the looks of things, Shinji felt the same way. Perhaps they could start doing this more often.

A strong tap on Shinji's shoulder interrupted them, and they parted reluctantly, meeting the eyes of the restaurant's manager.

"I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

"Gladly," Kamio replied disdainfully, pulling Shinji along with him. "We'll have a much better time somewhere else anyway."

Kamio's mother felt terrible that her son had ruined the banquet. Tachibana worried that Shinji and Kamio were going to skip practice to make out, now that they'd discovered their fervor for the pasttime. An-chan came to just as they were leaving, and she slipped out and followed them.
