Yamashita Tomohisa… successful young man with health love life…. except that he lost his job, his girlfriend broke up with him and because they lived together, he had to move out. So he was standing at the train station, wondering what he should do with himself and only one place came to his mind. Place where he was happy, where he didn’t have to pretend, place where dreams come true.
Yes, he was going to his grandma.
-----
When Yamapi got out from train and looked around, every corner, every house made that all of his memories came back to him. His parents never really cared about him but grandma… grandma was a different story. She knew that Pi needed warm and attention and she was able to gave him that and because of that every summer Yamapi spend with her, together they discovered new nooks at her vineyard, at hills bathed in sunlight.
He was really happy then and sometimes Yamapi thought that he acted like a bastard because when he finally became independent he drifted apart from the only person who ever cared about him. By the time his contact with grandma limited to occasional phone calls and Christmas cards, he got something more important on his mind or at least that was what he thought. He had his carrier, his girlfriend… deep inside he hoped that grandma understood that he never stopped thinking about her, that he still loved her very much.
“You need help? You look kind of lost…”
Yamapi was so deep in his thoughts that he didn’t notice that someone stopped car right next to him. He was looking at young, handsome man who smiled at him good-naturedly.
“No, I think that I still can get there…”
“Where are you going?”
“Yamashita’s vineyard.”
“Oh… Hoop in, I can give you a lift.”
“Thank you.”
And that is why Yamapi loved village, everyone cared for each others, even for strangers. He almost forgot that people were capable to disinterestedness.
They drove in silence but it wasn’t awkward. With every meter he recognized places in which he played, where he felt alive. He smiled at the thought that soon he will be able to leave his problems behind him, he was sure that it will happen, as soon as he will see tenderness in his grandma eyes.
When he saw house and car stopped he didn’t wait to thank the driver, he burst out as soon as he saw her, sitting at the porch in big basket chair.
“Grandma!”
“Tomohisa!”
Yamapi hugged her with all his might and God… he really missed her. When he looked at her, Pi couldn’t not see that she lost her weight, that her eyes had dark circle and that something was engraved deep in her face, some kind of fatigue.
“Dear boy… you have no idea how happy I am that I see you.”
“Me too and I’m sorry that I didn’t contact with you more often.”
“It doesn’t matter any more.” She looked over Yamapi’s shoulder and smiled at the driver. ”Toma-kun! What are you doing here?”
“Oh… I saw him at the station and I brought him here.”
“How nice of you… Tomohisa this is Ikuta Toma-kun, he’s always helping me at the vineyard. Toma-kun, this is Tomohisa, my grandson.”
“Auntie always talk about you and finally you are here. It’s nice to meet you. ”
Tomohisa couldn’t ignore that Toma’s smile had effect on him, that it pin his hopes very much on something. He felt that his cheeks blushed when he hold out his hand.
“Pleasure is all mine.”
--------------
Days passed and slowly Yamapi felt that he got a new lease of life after his last failures. Every day he spend with grandma, they listened jazz and reminiscence their past, their time together.
And Toma… Toma was present in his new routine too. He taught Pi about grapes when they stood among viticulture, about vineyard and… how Pi should enjoy every days. Everything was much easier, without any wasted attempt. Yes… he really loved it all, didn’t have to fight with everything around him, maybe he was exactly where he should be? He even didn’t tried to keep any contact with his old friends, but why he should do something like that?
It never was “Ikuta-kun” or “Yamashita-kun”, they both felt like they were looking for each other since they were born, no, correct that, like they knew each other since forever. With every minute Yamapi felt that he was falling for Toma and he was sure that he wasn’t the only one. He felt for Toma’s committed, for Toma’s tenderness, for the way Toma pronounced his name, for Toma’s eyes filled with happiness which were brighter that any star, than everything what Yamapi ever saw and for that moment when he looked at Pi because he felt like nothing mattered any more.
Toma was like a temptation, like something what he already grasped but then slipped away. Every simple touch, every playful smile… it all made that he was burning and really, even if it may look like he was some kind of sadist, he was glad when Toma shivered under his touch, when Toma looked at him with some kind of urgent. Pi imagined how it would be to felt it, everything made that Yamapi felt that he was master of his own live, that no one manipulated him.
Maybe he though too much, maybe it was just a delusion, maybe he was still inside fairy tale but he didn’t say anything, he never done something what could cause that simple story became real life, but Yamapi was a coward, he was scared, because what sense was in doing anything when he had to go back to reality? So he just observed without any words, without any action, without anything.
----------------
Sometimes Yamapi’s friend told him that he wasn’t perceptive, that he couldn’t discern many things around him, but he was aware that his grandma wasn’t the same person as before. He knew that she concealed something and to tell the truth Pi was sure that it wasn’t something trivial and he was afraid.
There was only one person capable to enlighten him and he
“Toma, tell me something.”
“What?”
“What’s wrong with grandma?”
“… Nothing.”
“Come one, I’m not stupid.”
“Fine… but I never told you anything, ok?”
“Yes.”
“… She’s sick. Doctors told that it’s a cancer and she don’t have any chance for recover. That’s why she is so weak… But she still fight with this, she never give up.”
“God… Why she didn’t tell me?”
“You really asking why? Yamapi… you wasn’t here, you was occupied with your life and she didn’t want to upset you, disturb you… well I don’t know. She thought that in this way everything will be better.”
“It’s not true! I love her! She never…”
“Did you tell her that?”
“…”
“That’s what I thought. And listen… don’t tell her that you know, the last thing what she need is pity.”
“Yeah… right…”
“I’m sorry that you found out in that way.”
“It’s ok. Thank you for your honest.”
---------------
Yamapi got heart on his sleeve. He felt deceived, powerless, without any chance for doing something, something what could bring him calmness. He struggled inside without any answers, without anything except fear. He knew that all people were born as a innocent men and by the time, the decisions they took, choices they made… it all show who they became, but no one is ever alone, people around mould his character too and Yamapi knew that for him it was grandma who taught him how he should live.
Toma knew that maybe it was too much for Pi, that younger one couldn’t handle with news. But he was right there, right next to Yamapi, ready to distract all worries. He spotted Tomohisa, when he was sitting in his grandma’s favorite chair.
“Yamapi, today in town is festival. Maybe you should go…”
“Toma, are you nuts? How can I?”
“But it will be good for you. You need to catch a breath. Anyway I will be there.”
“I don’t know…”
“Ok… Just… If you will be there, it will made me very happy.”
“I can’t promise you anything.”
“I know, but I will be waiting.”
Yamapi looked at Toma’s back as the latter walked away and thought that maybe Toma was right, that maybe some fun was what he needed and what was the most important he noticed that Toma’s kind words had hidden meaning and it wasn’t something what he could afford to waste.
--------------
Yamapi found himself in the middle of happy crowd but his eyes never stopped searching for what he came there and when he finally spotted Toma who was laughing with his friends, he was flooded with feelings, with needs and everything made that he felt like stranger in his own body.
When Toma noticed Pi, when their eyes met, everything became blurred and they both felt like that they were the only people on the world. It was moment of birth, birth of fascination and when they understood what it was, everything seemed possible.
They both found each other’s bodies as they were spinning around to the rhythm of vivid music and their breaths, completely lost to the world. Because of Toma, Yamapi started to dream about hope, dream about a change, dream about infinity passion. He understood that maybe he always walked through mist and Toma, by his presence, dispelled all fears, anxiety, all doubts. With Toma’s hands on his waist he felt like someone who was meant to do something amazing.
They didn’t waste words, both of them knew that it wasn’t just a simple dance, it was like foretaste of what will be next. It was enough when Toma slightly bowed his head, when Yamapi’s fingers clenched a bit harder on Toma’s body, when they looked in theirs eyes and all what they saw, was fully understanding.
They didn’t rush when they backed to Toma’s room, it was like they valuing moment, but when Yamapi closed door behind him, all concealed feelings since their first encounter burst like supernova. There was no one who could stop them, not a chance when they only wanted more, more of themselves. They were like drug addict who was absorbing the smallest thing, like men on the desert who want to drink and they were each others oasis. Every touch was like a writing a memorable work, every kiss was like a rain in the drought and it all made that they felt special, without any restriction, just free men with aspiration for fulfillment.
When they lay in the bed with entwined fingers, sharing the same air, they never broke the silence, they both thought that their encounter was magnificent and maybe they were the luckiest people in the world, because they found their soul mate and even if none of them said magical “I love you” they knew about it and it was enough.
----------------
Yamapi was sure that every next day will be like his last night, a little lazy, without any hurry but full of happiness and accomplishment and what was most important, he wasn’t alone. He felt like little kid in the middle of game, but every thoughts vanished when he came home and all what he saw was an ambulance. Grandma…
He ran to the doctor.
“What happened? Tell me!”
“You should go to her… She need you right now.”
“What? No! Do something!”
“I’m so sorry…”
Every breath was like a torture, he used his all willpower to move his legs and when he saw her, so fragile and weak, Yamapi felt that his world changed once again.
“Grandma…”
“Tomohisa, you’re here.”
“Of course.”
“Listen… I have to tell you something. This all, everything what I have, it now belong to you.”
“Please… don’t say that. It will be fine.”
“Shhh… don’t cry. It’s all right. I’m tired and seeing you so happy is like fondest dream. Tomohisa remember one thing. Whatever people say, you can always came back home and your home is exactly here, among the grapevine, with Toma…”
“You knew…”
“Of course silly boy and because of this I know that I will leave you in good hands. And please… don’t cry, I can’t stand the thought that you will be sad, so… be happy for me.”
“Grandma!”
But it was the end. Yamapi never again heard her voice, all what he remembered from that moment was her gentle smile remained on her face and Toma’s strong arms around his waist, holding tight his trembling body.
It was all.
---------
Later, when sun became moon, Yamapi stood in the middle of the vineyard, only he and the plants. He though that death really changes things, maybe even clarifies them. It bring some people apart and some of them closer. When everything seemed obvious, life could surprise and people still could surprise themselves.
He didn’t know the future, he didn’t knew if he was able to face up the new challenges, but he knew one thing. He wasn’t alone. He lose someone who was his mentor, but instead he gained love. No, he wasn’t alone.
Yamapi remembered something what grandma asked him when he was a kid. How many angels can dance on the pine head? Back then he laughed, because really, why angels would do something stupid like that, but he finally knew the answer.
“Tomohisa… what are you doing here? It’s cold, let’s go back inside.”
Yamapi turned and smiled, because he saw exactly what needed in that moment. Right before him stood Toma, all worried and exhausted but still with that glint in eyes, glint that dispersed the darkness. And about angels… Yamapi didn’t care how many of them could dance there, not when he got his own angel.
“Yeah, we can go back.”
And they walked towards everything what will approach them. Next to each other, always ready to catch when one of them will slip or fall. Ready for everything, together.
A/N: I just want to say, that lately there were really fantastic fics about them and I felt the urge to write something, so thank you for inspiration :)
