Reverse Alchemy - Gold Into Lead

Mar 16, 2009 17:37

Paul Jacob recently mirrored my sentiments on all the stimulus plunder and funny-money haphazardly being dumped into select segments of the economy (big surprise, I haven't seen cent one)... With all of this spending, that's now reaching trillions of dollars, the current administration is destroying wealth and essentially turning gold into lead.

The Government may be able to print money, but they aren't able to create wealth. They can give breaks to enterprise, which can create wealth - but that doesn't seem to be on the current agenda. So, it seems the only other means left are to expropriate wealth from its citizens, borrow from other entities with wealth at some cost, and inject counterfeit fiat money that only dilutes existing wealth in the long run. It's too bad there is no such thing as "something from nothing," and the steep costs of this stimulus will become apparent once its recipients start spending it - the price of goods & services skyrocket, while the value of the dollar plummets, and future generations are saddled with paying back the debt, with interest.

I admit, I'm not a financial genius, but I've always tried to follow the economy as best I'm capable, and I keep failing to see how this supposed panacea stimulus is actually supposed to work, as advertised. I'm just not seeing how it will help anyone in the long run, except a select handful of well-connected crooks. All I seem to see is wealth being destroyed, and a bunch of grinning hippies holding hands and singing Kumbaya, while the economy is being burned to the ground.

I sincerely hope I'm just being a pessimistic mope. Maybe The Messiah™ secretly possesses lapis philosophorum, and is just waiting for it warm up... otherwise we're in for a rough time. If not, I'm at least hopeful that there'll be enough wealth left over, that enterprise can pick up and mend the pieces of our economy, once this country's foray into Socialism proves destructive.
