Six Month Anniversary

And other ramblings

Week 4 of the new job. Things are going really well. I love the people on my team. They're all really smart and very easy to work with. The hours aren't bad at all. I've made some minor adjustments to my social schedule, which are of course all for the better. I used to be out in Manhattan everyday after work doing something ridiculous. But now I've slowed down a lot and I'm only doing the things I really want to do. I'm also saving more money that way too.

Jason is officially moving out on January 1st. He just can't deal with his crazy roommate or even crazier landlords any longer. He's found quite a few prospects on Craig's List over the last few weeks for apartments opening up in January. He was originally going to be moving out in February but there's no point of staying in Flushing any longer. Saturday we have one appointment set up already for a place in Jackson Heights. We're hoping to go out and see at least 3 places. I'll be living there too come June so I have to like the place also.

In other news, I'm going to Z100's Jingle Ball on Friday. I was driving to work listening to Z100 as usual when they announced they were giving away tickets to Jingle Ball. They do this all day everyday so it wasn't really big news. But they were playing the game "Guy, Girl or Gay" which is where they read personal ads and you have to decifer whether the person who wrote it was a guy, a girl, or gay. I tried dialing a few times and the line was busy. Finally they picked up the phone and I ended up on the air playing the game. I actually won (by guessing 2 of the 3 correctly) so now I have tickets to Jingle Ball! I also got a free Cannon digital camera with a photo printer!

Meanwhile I know I sounded like such an idiot on the radio. The whole Zoo group was cracking up the entire time I was on the air. Still I won my tickets so I'm really pumped up. The lineup is awesome: Maroon 5, Vanessa Carlton, Ryan Cabrera, Ashlee Simpson, Switchfoot, Jo Jo, Kelly Clarson, Hilary Duff and Destiny's Child. I like most of them and I LOVE Maroon 5 and Ryan so it's going to be a great show. I'm pretty sure the seats are like crazy close to the stage. I just hope I can smuggle in a camera.

So as usual the week and weekend have filled up considerably. Tomorrow is our 6 Month Anniversary and coincidentally Duran Duran is taping their appearance on Last Call with Carson Daley so Jason and I are going. We were able to score free tickets to the taping which is really excited. It starts at 5:30 which is going to make it really tight to get there. There's a weird half day at work tomorrow where we'll be out in the field most of the day and ending with a social lunch that will supposedly end at 4pm. Hopefully I can bail a little early.

Then we have the apartment hunting saturday and maybe a movie. Then Sunday the family is putting up the Christmas tree. Bleh. I hate the holidays. It'll be nice to go bowling, though. I haven't gone the last tweo weeks. It was cancelled two weeks ago because of Thanksgiving. Then last week I had the Ben Jelen and Lourds concert. That show was great but it was too long. There was some watered down Rufus Wainwright wannabe as the first opener (after the extreme juggler - what the fuck was that about???) and then the show got really good. Lourds was on stage for about an hour and did all of my favorites, including a duet on And She Was with some queer-looking boyband wannabe who's name I immediatley erased from my brain.

Ben was really good and played a lot of new music. Jason had more fun making fun of the people in the crowd, including the rhythmless lesbian rocking out to DietRufus. I made some friends, two college grisl who were also at Tyler's show at The Bitter End. They loved all the same music I did: Ben, Tyler, Gavin Degraw, John Mayer. This confirmed my suspicions that I am indeed a 14 year old girl. We also ran into Joe, the older guy we met on line for Duran Duran back in October. He lives all the way out on Long Island (exit 50something on the LIE) and actually drove us home! How cool is that? The benefits of membership I guess.

Meanwhile I realize that writing is an escape from me. The novel (read: journal from the summer getting re-edited slowly and poorly) has been on hold for a while. I'm too busy living life and being happy to sit around and write. It takes negative emotion to motivate me. I think this is why I'm in such a mood to write today. Despite all the good stuff going on, I was hit with some tragic news late last night concerning a friend.

Last night I got a call from a friend from high school, Regina, who was living in Maryland with Mike Taylor. Both of them were really close friends of mine through high school but we all lost touch through college. I figured Regina was calling to tell me that she and Taylor were finally engaged. In fact, they're broken up and she's living in upsate New York, working for the same company (a grocery chain) but just in a different location. They're selling the house they bought together and Mike is working as a financial advisor in the DC metro area. But that wasn't the reason for the call.

Regina called to tell me that Mike Yirilli's father died suddenly over the weekend. Mike Yirilli is another friend from high school. He's two years younger than me and we became friends very early on at THHS. He worked with me and Rob at McDonalds and became part of my circle of friends. He had his own crazy circel of friends too, all class of 2001 people, who I knew decently well. He's a senior at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and just got a job offer from Bank of America here in NYC. We've done a pretty good job keeping in touch since he's been away at school. I didn't even know his dad was sick.

Regina said the news was all very startling. It happened very quickly and no one was expecting it. Sabrina, Regina's younger sister, and also THHS Class of 2001, was the one who thought to call me. She didn't even know if I was still in New York but they got my home number from Mike Taylor and that's how Regina left me a message. She gave me Sabrina's cell phone at which point I called her and we talked for a while about what happened. Apparently his dad had a liver problem but it wasn't very serious. But he wasn't feeling well one morning, went to the doctor, was immediately admitted into the hospital, was sedated, went into surgery and died the next day never waking up. Mike flew up from UNC in the middle of finals and never had a chance to say goodbye to his dad. It's just so awful.

I called Rob this morning (after making about ten phone calls last night) because I was only thinking of THHS people that needed to know. He's going to come to the wake with me since Mike Yirilli was a close friend of his too. It's just so sudden and unexpected and I feel so bad for Mike. I feel sort of numb over the whole thing. I had a big fight with my dad Monday night and it just makes me wonder why everyone stresses over the stupid shit. It's just not worth it.

Oh and if you want a good cry (one that's not induced by the loss of a friend's loved one) you should check out Finding Neverland. It's by far the best picture of the year.
