I have read my friends’ pages everyday. And craigslist.
DH and I belong to the Precinct Community Council and every August we do an event called ‘National Night Out Against Crime’. Some communities have candlelight marches, street fairs, etc. We used a large field near the boardwalk. DJ, rides, clowns, vendors and more stuff. TGI Fridays did quesadillas and our volunteers grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. I think the estimate was a little over 1,000 people passed thru. DH (the council prez) and I (the sec’y) send out the letters and start confirming the sponsors in May. This was our last time. Everything just fell into place and we actually enjoyed ourselves.
Here in Coney Island we have a minor league baseball team.
The Brooklyn Cyclones started their season in fine form. A few weeks later they walked with us on the boardwalk for ‘Take Your Base’, to raise money for cancer. It gave us a chance to reacquaint with the manager and to get to know the new players. Baseball boys from all over the country come to the BIG CITY for the first time. It can be overwhelming. There are no fans like Brooklyn fans.
I’d already fallen in love with the shortstop, Matt. DH told him we were adopting him for the summer. Although he’s younger than both our kids, that’s not what I had in mind. My posse were always in his face with cameras taking pictures for me (thank you, Donna & Staci). Matt’s a real good sport. He’s the voicemail on my new cell phone (another story) since Karaoke night at Applebees. All the girlies tried to get close to Matt but he held them off and told them he had ‘a girlfriend back home’. He is sweet. Can I pick em? This year’s team was the best ever. During the season Mets players - Moises Alou, Paul Loduca and Ramon Castro played with the Cyclones while rehabbing. Those guys look really old next to a bunch of 20 year olds. We decided to go to State College, PA for a road trip. Great town but the Waffle House was a disappointment. Then we went to Hudson Valley for the Allstar Game. Charley Brown’s had $1.50 margaritas. A last minute trip to Aberdeen, MD. We didn’t get to eat crabs. And how could we not schlep up to Auburn for the championship game? Auburn is really small town. The tickets were handwritten! We (4 of us) were wearing our red Brooklyn sweatshirts and the locals took turns quizzing us about Nathan’s hotdogs. Unfortunately, my pal Matt got hit in the head in the last playoff game and couldn’t play in the championships. He was the spark all season and it must have hurt to watch from the railing as his team took a beating. I know DH and I had tears in our eyes as we left the last game in the 9th inning. Edgar, you’re still our hero.
Kat, I didn’t dance on the dugout this year but there’s a quick shot of me sitting in the stands in the team video on youtube!!
Did I mention Ms.G graduated from community college in June? She was gonna take a year off from school and then a few weeks ago, she announced she was going back! And guess who has to subsidize this venture? It’s all about the benjamins.
Had holiday dinner with granny and the kids. Granny is not the cook she used to be. They will come to me for Thanksgiving. The good son is talking about sending DH to spring training in Port St Lucie in March. I’m thinking road trip.
Who’s coming to see ‘Hairspray’? Are you staying in the city? Would you like to get together? And who’s been? Isn’t he gorgeous in person? Kim, did you get to talk to Lisa?
