I don't understand what is happening down in New Orleans. During Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina, most people came together when nobody had anything but the clothes on their back. Cities were flooded, half of my own town was flooded. I still don't remember ever hearing about this kind of "lawlessness" as they put it. Of course, Katrina is sooo much worse than Floyd ever was. Still--shooting at the doctors who are trying to evacuate sick patients? I can understand why people are tempted to steal food, water, clothing. Shooting at police? hospital workers? helicopters? Stealing jewelry and TVs? What are they trying to get out of killing doctors?
And how incredibly stupid to steal TVs and microwaves. Newsflash - you can't use them in a city that's mostly underwater!
I'm also shocked at how slow relief seems to be coming to these people in New Orleans, Mississipi, etc. I realize the work is overwhelming, but when people are sitting in feces...
Everyone around here is complaining about gas prices, which of course I can sympathize with because folks can't get to work, school, etc. when it costs $40-$100 to fill up your vehicle. We need to be thankful that we are not in the situation they're in farther south.
I can't help but be paranoid about the rest of hurricane season...NC always has a hurricane each year. Some just bring some rain and wind, some flood and rip apart towns. I just pray we don't have to face anything like Katrina. :(
