She learned several compositions of her great-great grandfather Mahathma Sri Neelakanta Sivan - an enlightened Saint from Padmanabhapuram, Kerala. Her father (late) K.V.Ram a renowned industrialist from Chennai was her inspiration and strength at all times. She has an elder brother R. Ravikrishnan and an elder sister Rama Chandiramani. She was schooled at Rosary Matriculation-Chennai and obtained her Masters in Commerce from the Madras University. Uma Mohan is also an artist, dramatist, dancer, poet and writer. She married T. Mohan Rao, a businessman and social worker from Chennai on 27 June 1990. They have two daughters Krupa Rakesh and Kruti Mohan. Her family is very supportive to her work and her intention to bring home the essence of the Vedas making it accessible to every person.
