Volume 5 / 4-Koma Translations

Jun 19, 2012 18:56

...well, let's get started! First time translating anything, so bear with stiff grammar and some weird stuff. I'm using the Japanese way of last name first, then first name since I'm used to that. There are some things I'm not sure on, so correct me if I've made any mistakes!

.
New line is a new box or new speech bubble (joint ones don't count), -- is a new panel, // means new page, italics are those small handwritten text. Bold is the title of the 4-koma.
Something I should clear up about the kanji - the schools are literally east school, etc, but I'm using the furigana in the manga for them. There are multiple readings for each kanji in Japanese, and in the manga, for example, east, can be read as higashi and tou. I'll leave Higashi, since it's sort of a name, and make tou into east.

Open notepad and paste this on there, and just read it with http://tieba.baidu.com/p/672864116 I'm not comfortable with using already translated 'raws'. Direct me to Japanese raws and I'll whip out photoshop and put the text on it.

[the stamp basically has north, east, south, west on it]
In the era of Heisei, a city in Saitama Prefecture ---

There exists many delinquents, living peacefully in carefree days, as if they've forgotten the fights of the early days.
However, after the previous ruler, Kurosaki Mafuyu left,
the balance of power of this land has been broken.
--
//
--
[the map says north, east, south, west in the respective positions! you might want to remember these kanji. they appear a lot...]
Forces have divided the land into four parts: north, east, south and west,
each raising the flags of war.
--
Some people,
fight for power.
[the kanji in the bg is 'west']
--
Others, fight to raise their place in power.
[kanji is 'east']
--
Their goal, is of course to unify the land!
--
This manga isn't that kind of story --
hahaha

South - East Story:
--
Higashi School - Nishi School - Minami School - Kita School   1
--
The city I live in is very special; there's a school in each of the north, east, south, west, four areas of the city.
--
I'm a student of Minami, the school in the south area.
Girl With Braids: Do you know of the 'School Area Freedom System*'?
--
Girl With Black Hair: Yeah, isn't it the free choice of which school we want to go to, no matter where we live? I chose to go to Minami, despite the fact that my home is pretty far away.
Girl With Braids: Correct. You can also choose to go to state school; it's a system everybody likes.
--
Girl With Braids: My brother attends Higashi, but his bento is here. What do I do?
Girl With Black Hair: Ah. I think this is something like one of the flaws of this system...
--
*I have no idea how to translate this...
--
A Trip To Higashi For The Sake Of A Bento  2
--
Girl With Black Hair: School ends in the morning today, so you can just take a long trip home and go to Higashi, right?
Girl With Braids: Well... yeah, I could just do that...
--
Girl With Light Hair: Wait! Minato!
--
Girl With Light Hair: Higashi is a school crawling with delinquents!
Girl With Light Hair: If...if you have to go...
--
Girl With Light Hair: Then pay for the class fees* before you go. Your wallet will be robbed anyway.
Girl With Braids > Minato: She already decided that I'll be robbed?
--
*I have no idea so I just winged it.
--
The Other Side Probably Envies Her *  3
--
Minato: Sempai, is Higashi really that dangerous?
Girl With Light Hair: Hmm? Is it your first time there?
--
Girl With Light Hair: I was surrounded the moment I stepped in the last time I went there. It was really scary at the time.
Girl With Light Hair: They really aren't polite to girls.
--
Girl With Light Hair: Well then, be careful!
[the poles say Yakisoba and Ramen.]
--
Minato: Sempai... no matter how much I think about it, I'm pretty certain it's because of that bicycle...
--
* don't ask. I don't know.
--
Dangerous Higashi  4
--
In the end, I decided to go take a look.
Minato: I'll just observe from the front gates; I'll just go home if it feels off. Yeah.
--
Minato: Okay! I'll just observe from here...
Boy With Dark-ish Hair > Boy A: Hey, listen to this. I have to take extra lessons.
Boy With Light Hair > Boy B: I do too. It's such a bother.
--
Guy With Mustache: Now then, I'll ask and you answer.
Guy With Mustache: Who established the Kamakura shogunate?
--
Boy A: Hey, is Kamakura made of snow?
Boy B: Is a shogunate a type of curtain?
Minato: They're starting with such basics for extra lessons?
They are, in a way, very dangerous.
--
Eh?  5
--
Minato: What do I do? Maybe it's best if I go back...
Voice: Oi!

--
Boy A: That uniform, isn't it the uniform for Minami? Suspicious!
Boy B: It really is! Is she here to spy on us? Suspicious!
Minato: I'm screwed!
--
Boy A&B: Oi, what are you...
--
There was something that passed through...
--
Accidentally Dragged A Bicycle To School  6
--
Boys A&B: Okubo-san! What are you doing?
Minato: They know him?
Okubo: ..ah.
--
Okubo: It's nothing, I woke up in the morning and I found a radish where the seat should be.
Okubo: So...
--
Okubo: I dragged the bike to school. It was rather tiring.
Minato And Boy A&B: You could walk to school! You don't need a bike.
--
Okubo: Ah. It took an hour and a half.
Minato And Boy A&B: Just ride the bus! Or just skip school today.
--
This Is What's Important  7
--
Okubo: Oh, speaking of which. Who's this?
Boy B: AH! That's right!
Boy A: She's a suspicious person! From Minami!
Minato: Eh?
--
Minato: No! I'm just here to...
Minato: I'm just here to give this bento to someone!
--
Minato: Uwaah... He doesn't seem to believe me! What do I do...? He's probably only thinking of the animosity between the two schools...
--
Okubo: Can you use this to make a bento? Or is it a bit late if I give if to you now?
Minato: Is that what he cares about?
--
Okubo-san  8
--
Okubo-san is a good person.
Okubo: Oh---
Okubo: So you're here to take your brother's bento to him? How nice...
Minato: I'm sorry to ask you to show me the way.
--
Okubo: No, it's fine. How old is your brother?
Minato: He's in his third year of middle school.
--
Okubo: Oh. Then you have to go to the buildings on the other side.
--
Okubo: Whenever I walk this way, bird droppings fall here. It only happens to me, too.
Minato: That's...
But, he's a bit of an unlucky person.
--
Unlucky Boy  9
--
Okubo: Whenever I stand in line to buy something, the person in front of me often buys the last one in stock. Vending machines and the ramen stores too.
Minato: Oh, there are those kinds of people.
--
Okubo: Whenever I reach a crossroad, the traffic lights always turn red, and I've never won one of those prizes from the yearly postcard. * Each year the whole family writes about 200 of them.
Minato: That... That is a bit unlucky...
--
Okubo: And... ah!
--
Okubo: There are banana peels on the ground wherever I go. It's rather annoying.
Minato: Hurry up and become a comedian.
--
*...I'm supposing there's some sort of raffle for these, and the chance of winning is quite high.
--
To Not Leave Behind Marks  10
--
I'm not sure why, but schools in this area have middle schools and high schools built right next to each other. Even though it's not a private school.
[high school on the left, middle school on the right (it's the other way around on the chinese ver. but i have vol. 5 in japanese and it's like this!]
--
So if you meet students out of class, you have no way of telling if they're a high school student or a middle school student.
Minato: I forgot to ask him...
--
Minato: From the way he's talking, he should be older than me, but if I ask him now it seems a bit off...
Minato: I'll... have to use an indirect way of asking him, and make sure he doesn't realize what I asked him!
--
Minato: Which gravure models debuted when you were in your sixth year of primary school? You know, like G-cups...
Okubo: Eh? Why are you suddenly asking that?
Incorrect choice of topic.
--
Delinquent School Higashi  11
--
Okubo-san is in his second year of high school.
Minato: Three years older than me...
Okubo: Higashi doesn't really care about ages, so don't worry.
--
Okubo: Our banchou is in his third year of middle school. Two years younger than me.
Minato: Eh? Third year of middle school?
--
Minato: D-don't you usually look at ages when you choose things like banchous? It should at least be a high school student, right?
Okubo: Nope. The critera for choosing our banchou is fighting ability, leadership ability
--
Okubo: And charm.
Minato: Charm?
--
[T/N: Apparently, Mafuyu had a lot of charm... (it's 'cuteness' in the chinese ver. but it's aikyou in japanese - um, that translates as charm, and I think it fits better.]
--
First Meeting  12
--
Minato: ...Is something like that important...? Charm...
Okubo: Yeah, it's surprisingly important. It shows in really important situations.
Maizono: Hm?
--
Maizono: Okubo, what are you doing?
Okubo: Oh, Maizono.
--
Okubo: He's the same age as me; he's number two in this school.
Minato: E-eh?
Okubo: He can really fight.
Minato: Oh! I get it now!
--
Minato: Me me me me me! You're not charming!
Maizono: You're very rude.
--
Instinct  13
--
Okubo: She's here to bring a bento to someone. I'm helping her find the way.
Minato: Hello.
Maizono: Oh.
--
Okubo: So, well, if there's a fight today, I won't be a part of it...
Voice: Nishi is attacking!
--
/
--
Minato: Okubo-san?
--
Intense Battle  14
--
Minato: What do I do...? I was afraid to stay in the school alone, so I followed him here... Uwaah... they're really fighting...
--
/
--
/
--
Minato: Okubo-san!
--
You Should Have Noticed Earlier!  15
--
Minato: Okubo-san, I don't think you're suited to be a delinquent.
Shelter.
Okubo: Ugh... it's true, isn't it? I like fighting, though...
--
Okubo: Ah! I'm sorry.
Okubo: Your brother...
Okubo: Your bro...ther...? Huh?
--
Okubo: You are...
Okubo: You... um... huh?
Minato: Is something wrong?
--
Okubo: Now that I think about it... I haven't asked you for his name! Who are you looking for? For that matter, I don't even know your name!
Minato: Ah...!
This is something that happened 30 minutes after they met.
--
The Goal Is To Find Her Brother  16
--
Minato: Oh, well. It's nice to meet you, my name is...
Black Haired Guy: Okubo! Are you alright?
--
Okubo: Ah! Banchou...
--
Minato: ...Is this the banchou in his third year of middle school?
Okubo: Yeah.
Kangawa > Kouhei: ...Hello, my name is Kangawa Kouhei.
--
Minato: Hello, my name is Kangawa Minato.
Minato: Brother.
He's the brother they talked about.
--
Losing Face  17
--
Minato: Onii-chan*, what are you doing here? What's this about you being banchou?
Kouhei: Minato, you're the one that's out of place here!
Kouhei: Why did you come here?
--
Kouhei: Uwaaaaaah --- Don't look at me! Don't look at me! This is so embarassing!
Minato: No... well... being a banchou in this age is a bit embarrassing, true...
--
Kouhei: That's not it! I don't care about that!
Kouhei: It's because you know that me, a banchou...
--
Kouhei: Ate waffles and milk pudding this morning! So embarassing!
Minato: Huh? He's embarrassed because of that?
--
*It's weird if it's 'brother'. It just doesn't work in English, so I'm leaving it like this. (t/n: oh Kouhei, why so cute.)
--
Criteria Of Becoming Banchou  18
--
Okubo: Oh, so your brother was banchou.
Minato: Ah. Thank you for taking care of him all this time. *
Kouhei: No - Don't act like you're at some parent - teacher conference!
--
Minato: I brought this here for you, you have to eat it. You said you're lacking in money this month, right?
Kouhei: Tch. I know.
--
Kouhei: Ah! This is great! Wow!
Kouhei: Today we have... burger patties...
--
Kouhei: Er...
Minato: He does have a certain charm to him...
Okubo: I told you.
--
*Another one of those awkward things when in English.
--
Her Brother's Reason  19
--
Okubo: You know, your brother chose to go to this school because he respected someone here.
Minato: Respect, huh...
--
Minato: I was really surprised when he said he wanted to go to Higashi...
Minato: But it was for some sort of romantic reason, huh?
--
Okubo: Kangawa-san*, you said you attended Minami, right?
Okubo: The students over there have a bit more class than us, did you decide to go there to go to a good college?
--
Minato: No, I chose to go because I like their western style of uniform. The winter uniforms are really cute.
Okubo: Oh. Your reason is rather simple.
--
*I just checked it up - it's Kangawa. Oh god, this name is so confusing.
--
Name  20
--
Okubo: You know, calling you Kangawa-san feels weird.
Minato: Just call me by name. It's Minato.
--
Okubo: Then...
Okubo: Minato-chan.
--
/
--
Minato: Okubo-san... you really aren't suited to be a delinquent.
Okubo: Eh? Why?
Accidentally had her heart-rate increase* for him.
--
*This is just off, but writing 'heart thumped for him / heart beat for him' is just. Ew.
--
Let Her Emotions Calm Down First  21
--
[the sign above to door says male's toliet]
Okubo: Er, well, do you mind if I...?
Minato: Go ahead.
--
I never thought my heart-rate would increase for someone from Higashi...
Minato: But, Okubo-san isn't really like a delinquent, and he's really nice...
--
Minato: I mean, if onii-chan is the banchou, it doesn't matter if Okubo is a delinquent or not.
Ker-cha.
Okubo: Hrmm, this is a problem...
--
Okubo: Every stall doesn't have toliet paper. Do you have any?
Minato: This is the real problem.
--
Worrying  22
--
Okubo: Do you need me to take you home?
Minato: No, it's fine! Thank you very much!
--
At first, I was afraid for my safety, but now I'm glad I made this trip...
Minato: When I get home, I'm going to ask onii-chan some things...
--
Ba-chaa.
Voice: I'm sorry!
Arf arf arf!
Voice: Uwaah -- the wild dogs are surrounding me!
And then.. oi...
--
Minato: Do you need me to take you home?
Okubo: No!
Okubo: I'm fine! I'm already used to it!
Speech Bubble at the bottom: Okubo!
--
The Days After  23
--
Kouhei: Why do you have a radish hanging there?
Minato: Because of romance.
--
/
--
/
--
Kouhei: This radish dish is delicious.
--
East - South Story:
--
A Guy From Another School   1
--
Kouhei: Lately, my sister keeps asking me things about Okubo. What happened, anyway?
Maizono: Your sister is from Minami, right?
--
Maizono: You know, I have a buddy who goes to Minami.
Kouhei: Eh? Buddy?
Kouhei: You have buddies?
--
Maizono: Do you want to meet him?
Kouhei: Eh? Now? No, although I have my doubts, I believe you!
--
Maizono: That's not it, he just walked by. That's my buddy.
Kouhei: Didn't he just ignore you?
--
A Good Friend   2
--
Kouhei: You're kidding, right?
Maizono: Ah - Himeji is an introvert.
--
Bilililili.
Maizono: Oh. It's here.
Kouhei: What's here?
--
[Received Messages
Himeji
Subject: Oh, Yuuto
Text:
Long time no see!
Has it been a week?
How are you?]
--
Maizono: Yeah, it has been quite a while... Yup.
Kouhei: Eh --- ?
--
Himeji-kun   3
--
Himeji: I was wondering who it was,
Himeji: So it was you, Yuuto.
--
Himeji: I'm very busy. I have no time to play with you.
Maizono: Okay. Let's go, Kangawa.
Kouhei: Eh? Go where?
--
/
--
Maizono: Thank you for inviting us to tea.
Kouhei: Ehhhh? He invited us to tea? I had no idea!
--
A Small Heartwarming Story * Pt. 1   4
--
Maizono: Himeji isn't good at talking nicely to people. He's pretty nice on the inside.
Kouhei: You make me jealous... I have no idea how you made friends with him.
--
Maizono: Oh, that's because I knew him from the innocent days of elementary school.
Mini Himeji: Mister... **
Yuuto, Age 8.
--
Mini Himeji: It's very windy in here; do you mind if we close the window?
Book: Your wig is tilted to one side.
Maizono: He's very mature, always thinking of others.
--
Maizono: But, you know, he wrote it on the class diary - I think that part was brilliant.
Spread amongst the entire class.
Kouhei: How cruel!
-
* My Chinese skills fall short here, so I just... guessed! Help me?
** Or 'sensei', if you prefer. Asian titles are so difficult that even I don't get it half the time. Anyway, calling someone 'teacher' is just weird, so let's do this instead! If you have a good substitute, comment!
--
A Small Heartwarming Story Pt. 2   5
--
[Yuuto always used to look out for me!]
Kouhei: Eh? Is that so?
--
Teacher: Himeji! You always use this to show your complaints! If you have a problem, just say it out loud!
Mini Himeji: Ah.
Voice: Mister!
--
Mini Maizono: Is the school violence? Is it a physical punishment? You can't just physically punish people!
Mini Maizono: If you're have to physically punish someone,
Mini Maizono: Please punish this obedient, understanding student who won't tell anyone of the deeds you do! I swear my parents won't voice a complaint!
--
[You were always shielding me without complaints.]
Kouhei: He was doing it for himself! *
Maizono: Ah.
--
* I think this is right? I'm not sure.
--

A Restaurant Chain's Workers  6
--
Worker A: Hey, don't you think that guy over there looks cool?
Worker B: Hm? Which one?
--
Worker A: Table 3, the one wearing glasses...
Worker: He's writing something on a cellphone...
--
/
--
Worker A: Those two guys... why aren't they letting him join the conversation...? I feel sorry for him...
Worker B: No... I think he shouldn't be writing an email here in the first place. Do you have a thing for guys with glasses?
--
Ordering Food  7
--
Maizono: Have you decided on what you'll order?
Himeji: Yeah.
Kouhei: Excuse me!
--
Worker A: Yes? May I take your order?
Maizono: Ah! Iced red tea and steamed shrimp rice*,
Kouhei: A cola and a hamburger combo.
--
Himeji: ...Coffee...
Maizono: Fresh milk and... the "Today's Special: A Romantic Girl's Pink Sundae Tower" offer.
--
Worker A: ...What should I do...? The guy with glasses is really being bullied... Sundae tower...
Worker B: Sundae tower... The way the guys are doing so is rather... unique...**
--
* There's no exact translation on nciku, so eh. The rest of the food too.
** 'Dangerous' in Chinese, but imo, that makes no sense.
--
For Reasons Unknown, They Ate Peacefully  8
--
Kouhei: Speaking of which, Himeji, how do you usually communicate with others? Do you write it on paper or something?
--
Maizono: No, he just speaks. He doesn't use a cellphone or paper at all.
Kouhei: Eh? Is it alright like that?
--
Himeji: What exactly, do you mean by that?
Himeji: I have no reason you tell you personal things on our first meeting, right?
--
Maizono: If you don't communicate with a cellphone, Himeji seems like a normal, cold, smart guy.
Himeji: Hmph.
Kouhei: Oh... how sneaky!
--
The Mechanics of Tsunderes  9
--
Maizono: If you want to chat with him properly, you have to send him your email address. Go on!
Kouhei: Oh... Then...
--
Kouhei: I'm sending it now ---
Himeji: Hm? Why do I have you exchange addresses with you?
--
Himeji: Listen, even if I know your email, it's not like I'm going to send you anything.
Himeji: This is because you're Maizono's friend, normally I never do this...
--
[It's not clear but it's a very cutesy phone message from Himeji!]
Kouhei: How dere *!
* Deredere from 'tsundere'. It's basically acting bashfully and cutesy.
--
The Chosen Person  10
--
Himeji: Of all the people that know my cellphone number, when not counting my family, you are the fifth.
Kouhei: So much pressure...
--
Kouhei: What do I do?
Kouhei: My place is below his close friends, so it should be okay...*
--
Maizono: Huh? If I'm the first person, who are the other three?
Himeji: Oh!
--
Himeji: When I'm on group dates, girls ask me for my number so I give it to them.
Kouhei: You're too hasty!
* I didn't get it either!
--
The Difference In A Boy's Outward Appearance And Inward Feelings 11
--
Maizono: Eh - Group dates, huh? What happened to them after that?
Himeji: Speaking of which...
ka-chi ka-chi
--
Himeji: That day, they sent an email to me...
[Already Received Emails *
Today, thank you --
I was really happy. Himeji,
you're really cool, I couldn't help but
have my heart race for you. Next time, I want to
meet with you seperately...
If I do this,
maybe it's a bit daring?
--
Himeji: So I gave them a reply.
[Already Sent Emails *
Me too!
I was also very happy.
I'm not good with words, so I
couldn't chat with you too much.
May I ask for the cheerful, energetic Miriko's **
help?
--
Himeji: But then she didn't really. Didn't I use the same kind of wording as her?
Kouhei: Isn't it obvious she wouldn't reply?
--
* Or inbox, outbox, if you prefer.
** I don't have my volume 5 with me at the moment, so I'm just guessing!
--
Someone Please Help Him 12
--
Kouhei: But Maizono's known him for so long, wouldn't he have told him the problem already?
Maizono: Hm...
--
Maizono: Himeji, this problem is because your email wasn't written very well.
Kouhei: He said it!
--
Maizono: Listen,
Maizono: This here...
--
Maizono: This kanji is very hard to pronounce. They probably don't know how to pronounce it.
Himeji: Oh, so that's it! Next time I should write with easier kanji.
Kouhei: That's not it!
--
Kangawa Is A Good Person 13
--
Kouhei: Listen, even if you're not good at talking, you should at least make an effort to talk to people!
Kouhei: Also, the email you wrote doesn't suit the situation at all!
--
Kouhei: Ah! Uh...
Kouhei: That... If you'd like, I can help you fix the text.
--
Himeji: Kangawa...
Kouhei: You... you don't have to thank me! I just want to say that since I know of this, I have to take responsibility and help you...
--
Himeji: This sundae doesn't have the gift that was supposed to come with this, what should I do...
Kouhei: Aaaaaah - Waitress!
ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong

I actually have a few things to do lately so I'll be updating at a slower pace.

yes i'm that bored. Comment first if you want to use, and if you want to slap this on raws and upload it somewhere, ask me and somewhere get pandascan's permission, since Oresama Teacher scanlation is mostly his work and I'm not comfortable with stepping onto his boundary. ...if you use it without permission, pray that I won't find you.

admin, if you're still there, i'd like more tags - like 'translation', '4-koma', maybe?
