Pretty lackluster in the club.
There are a few things that I get pretty enthusiastic about. Music, literature, writing, and soccer, to name a few. And politics. Sometimes. But for now, let's focus on writing. Keep that in mind - we'll come back to it later.
A few months ago, maybe March?, I stumbled across
Destructoid (hosted by
DoubleViking) via
Gorillamask. There, shameless plugs finished. Destructoid is essentially a blog about video games. I've played video games for a long time now, but I never really considered myself to be a "gamer" per se. Sure, I enjoy video gaming, and one could even say that it was a hobby or interest of mine. I usually dig on RPG, but I've been known to get into the occasional shooter or FIFA game. Meh, what do I care about a video gaming blog?
Dtoid isn't your run of the mill gaming blog. What attracted me to it is that it made me want to play video games. Sure, I read
Pitchfork, but I never wanted to pick up my guitar afterwards. Dtoid was blisteringly honest and had compelling, creative, and interesting articles. It wasn't so much about the gaming (I mean, it was, I like video games), but about how the place was being run. For the gamer, by the gamer, so to speak.
Fast forward a few months when they decided to give away a Nintendo DS. All you have to do is register on the boards and guess a number between 0-200. (The contest is still on if anyone's interested. If you win, and don't care for the DS, I'll pay you for it. Bwahah) I decided to register and guess - 198, ftw - and decided that drive-by contest guessing wasn't a cool thing to do, especially since I held the admins and writers at dtoid in such high regard. So I got involved in the dtoid community, as it were.
Fast forward a few weeks. During a thread about why video game journalism sucks, someone pointed out that grammar was becoming an issue, a limiting factor for the growth of grassroots, indie blogs. I pointed out that Dtoid had its fair share of comma splices, exchanged messages with the chief and ... now I have the power to edit anything published on the dtoid homepage. Again, it's not that I'm particularly knowledgeable concerning the latest gaming news. Far from it. I just enjoy the people and the chance to write and edit.
This post was designed to do a few things. Firstly, I want to bask in the sunshine of my newly appointed position. I think that it's a cool thing to do, as well as a chance to cut my metaphorical teeth. Secondly, I want to shamelessly promote dtoid.com, not only because I'm now involved in its production (although it's definitely a minor involvement), but also because I think that they're doing a positive thing with it. Even if you could give a shit about video games, go check it out. The more people that visit, the more money advertisers pay them. Besides, as a "struggling writer," I can appreciate the work they do.
Hooah!
