So, it was a quiet night tonight, didn't feel like doing much of anything after maybedeadcat went home so I figured I would put in disc 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and start the rewatch!

1.01 Welcome to the HellmouthSo, yeah, I can't remember the last time I watched this from episode 1. It's been over a year, at least. For those of you that don't know, ( Read more... )

I think Starbucks has gone from the trendy, cool hangout to McDonald's status now. One on every corner LOL.

Exactly.

But I've read interviews with Joss and Jane and the Mutant Enemy team and they would read the online forums, be impressed by the fans who were solving the season arc puzzles...and then do it anyway. And no matter how much fans wanted certain couples on the show, they didn't give in.

... a fan once told me Joss DID give into fans, and meant it as a good thing. Weird. But I always figured if they did, Dawn would've been killed off and stuff, so I can believe it. I like that they didn't give in. I think she was just trying to sell me on the idea that Buffy was better than fandoms where she didn't like the direction canon took.

I love and adore Buffy too, despite what I just said. I do think they could've done things differently, but honestly, even the things most people complain about are fine by me. I didn't like how Willow became evil, but to be totally honest with you, even in season two she sometimes took magic too far. She got into it to finish Jenny Calendar's work more or less, and so that right there gave her this association with magic being something you do to fix problems and tie up loose ends. I do wish they'd worked more with that and less with magic being a metaphor for drugs, but apparently that was also Alyson Hannigan's idea.

(Cordy icon here because it seems apropos.)

The mark of a "true fan" (for lack of a better word) is being willing to pick apart your show/book/movie and understand it's flaws. :)

When Season 6 initially aired I remember being really mad and confused by Willow's turn to the dark side. But then when I did my rewatch from Season 1, the hints were there and I felt so foolish for not seeing the warning signs. And WOW did that ring true with some IRL stuff that happened (my ex became an alcoholic about 6 years into our relationship) so while I hated it the first time, I've come to appreciate the metaphor.

LOL oh yes, I always figured Dark Willow's line about Dawn being whiny and annoying was meant for the fans who had suffered through two seasons of her Tweenage years. I felt they did better with her in Season 7. And really, being the younger sister to the Slayer would be rough!
