Oranges and lemons

For a friend:

The little boy sank to his school desk sobbing, his face sunk forwards into his folded arms. The bullies always made fun of him with stinging insult, always took his lunch, leaving him nothing but a tear-stained face, empty stomach and bruises from hard knuckles.  It never would be easy for him being the smallest boy in class, just like it's not easy being little in the face of the great big world.

You're not significant.

He went home, forgetting in unhappiness to wipe the dirt and tears from his face, and Mummy asked him what was the matter, and he told her.

Come here, Mummy said, and I'll show you a magic nobody else can do but yourself. She held up a fruit, asked, what is this I'm holding, darling? It's a lemon, he said. I don't like lemons, they're sour. I'll show you magic, she said, and cut the lemon, squeezing it in a juicer, and she poured the juice into a cup.

Taste it, she said, and tell me what it is. It's orange juice! Orange juice! The little boy hopped up and down in his excitement, a smile spreading from ear to ear. With brightness in his eyes he asked for the magic spell, and Mummy smiled and just said

"Darling, the magic is in your smile."

There was nothing that could get the little boy down. He would grow up to become a man of character.

The magic is in your smile (:

Oranges and lemons, Say the bells of St. Clement's
You owe me five farthings, Say the bells of St. Martin's
When will you pay me? Say the bells of Old Bailey.
When I grow rich, Say the bells of Shoreditch.
When will that be? Say the bells of Stepney
I do not know, Says the great bell of Bow

When life gives us lemons, make orange juice and let everyone wonder how the hell we did it!

you, thoughts, friends
