So. Partners in Crime.
I've got to get it out, so, under the cut, major spoilers for Doctor Who Season Four, and some nuttiness. Also, there are macros.
DONNA IS YOUR MASTER NOW.
I love the fact that Donna calls the Doctor on his self-important rampages: "I can't save them ! They're all gonne die !" "Doctor, tell me what you need." What he needs, apparently, is a companion with a realistic perspective. She's a shot of calm (funnily enough, considering she's DONNA.)
And I couldn't help but compare Donna's back-talk, hanging from the lift cage ("Hang on !" "I AM.") to some of Rose's sassier moments in danger. Rose was always quick to comment on the Doctor's habit of leaving you hanging until the last minute- see The End of the World, Tooth and Claw, etc. I think the best thing for the Doctor at this point is a companion who doesn't follow him blindly, but calls him on his shit and has a down-to-earth, totally ordinary viewpoint and manner. Somebody who doesn't see him as a "romantic lost prince," in his own words. Somebody who will argue with him, challenge him.
Actually, I think that's best for the viewers as well. While I enjoyed Voyage of the Damned for the ridiculousness and the danger and the fun characters and of course the UNENDING HOT; something about the over-the-top hero worship, the lonely god taken to the extreme, didn't sit right with me. The Doctor has never struck me as the kind of action hero to walk through a hall of flames in slow motion- he's just not that guy. He's the nerdy guy in trainers and a suit, he's the awkward outsider who's too rude, he's the nutter stringing together Christmas lights and scouring pads and kettles to save the world. He's the hero who doesn't stick around for the parade. And if the companion becomes a kind of mini-parade that follows him around singing his praises, I start to look askance at the writing team. "Do remember that this man is essentially homeless and never changes his clothes," I want to remind them.
All that wraps up to: I love Donna. She's too funny. The window-talking scene was an instant classic, as was all the luggage and the whole body language of that scene. At least the Doctor's figured out what he did wrong, acknowledged it out loud in words. I think Martha deserved that from the writers.
Speaking of the writing, one thing has stuck with me: the moment where Donna asks him about Martha and Rose. Specifically, how he refers to Rose's current state- still lost, he says. Still lost. I don't know how much I ought to be reading into that, but the choice of the word "lost" intrigues me. Because lost, in my mind, implies a certain degree of hope for recovery. Because lost things never really leave you- they haunt you, tease you, confound you. Because lost things can be found.
And just as I was still pondering that, we get the AKS$#JFLFL;DSFLAIL of all SLF*JFHO9FODFLAILS. ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE. Oh, it was a bunch of little explosions in my heart. To see her again, with that strange look in her eyes- my BFF suspects that Rose knows something the Doctor doesn't, about what's going to happen on Earth. Maybe she's looking for him and maybe she's just looking to save the world- I don't know from the spoilers exactly how their reunion plays out and how intentional it is, but I am darn-tooting athrilled at the possibilities.
I would like to end this on a mature note, but I think that SUCK IT, ROSEHATERS will substitute for that in a pinch.
