There was happy news yesterday. My childhood buddy Bojo and his wife Jocelyn welcomed their second daughter into the world. There a few pics Trinity Serrano here. She's the latest Spawn of The Ruffians, and she's a pretty little girl.

Rehearsals for Chino Singson's wedding reception gig last night. He sometimes reads this blog, and I don't know if the setlist is supposed to be a surprise or not, so I won't list the tunes here. But it's got a Hall and Oates tune in it, and a Joe Cocker one. How can you go wrong with that?

Among the tunes that did not make it into the setlist are:
  • The Doobie Brothers, "What a Fool Believes"
  • Martin Nievera, "Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin"
  • The Police, "Every Little Thing She Does"
  • Level 42, "Something About You"
O. Latak pa lang, panalo na. Gonna be another fun wedding set.

I've been rediscovering Weng Weng. Apparently, someone dubbed For Your Height Only in English, and the resulting version seems to be a cult hit in some places in Europe. Here's the very well-done trailer.

A friend of mine got me interested in Pino Palladino with his project of assembling a definitive (fat chance) Pino Palladino sampler compilation. I've been trying to find out if he played those incredible bass lines on some of the Go West and Level 42 songs I like (such as "Don't Look Down" and "Something About You"). I haven't found anything that says so, so for now I assume he didn't. But I hope he did.

This is the man played bass on Tears For Fears' "Woman In Chains", Paul Young's "Every Time You Go Away", and who has played on way more records than most people can aspire to.

Am really enjoying recording, both inside the booth and behind the desk. I didn't have much of a chance to discover this before, as the only time (before this last year) I ever booked serious studio time was back when I was a kid in 94 or 95, and I had no idea what I was doing back then, and my tracks from that time show it. Recently I've been enjoying 6- and 7-hour sessions doing take after take without many breaks, and man, I feel like I'm in my element. I wish I could do more.

It helps that my favorite studio for recording drums is such a pleasant place to work, but still, this is not something I knew I'd be able to do easily. The other instruments on the albums I'm working on are being recorded at my place, so I get to play engineer too. I won't say I'm good at that yet, but I'm getting better.

I'm thinking there's a career in here for me somewhere, but I can't quite see how to get there yet. I'll work on it.
