Yesterday night, I left a process running on one of the work computers. It was reading commands from a very large file and executing them one by one. I guessed it would be finished by today. I was wrong though. When I got here, the machine was crawling. I stopped the process (losing any work it might already have finished) and then re-ran it, keeping an eye on the speedometer this time.
Okay ... roughly 12000 instructions completed in 280 seconds.
With around 28 million fairly complicated instructions in that file (very large, remember?), the entire process would've taken around 8 days to complete.
I switched off the machine. I've got to find a better solution on monday.
