2009 Book #2: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Resistance (Minor Spoilers)

Resistance, by J.M. Dillard was released in September 2007 and really began the major push to reset the Star Trek universe in the 24th Century era. The stakes are considerably raised in this book, and a new Enterprise crew begins to take shape. This book changes things.

After the last novel, Death in Winter , Doctor Crusher has returned to the Enterprise and is living with Captain Picard. Commander Worf is acting first officer. There is also  a new ship's counselor, T'Lana, a Vulcan. Needless to say, she is far different from the former ship's counselor, Deanna Troi, who is now serving on the Starship Titan, along with her husband, Captain William Riker, Picard's former first officer. There are also new persons in the helm and security chief positions.

The novels starts off quickly, as Picard once again hears the Borg in his consciousness. Before long, he is convinced that he has to stop them from returning. Admiral Kathryn Janeway is convinced otherwise, after dealing them a terrible blow when she returned to Federation space with the Starship Voyager. Picard has to decide whether to accept her decision or risk the crew on what he knows by his personal contact with the Borg, who themselves have a new agenda.

The novel moves at a steady pace and is an "edge of  your seat" thriller. The writing is consistently strong. The story does not sacrifice character moments for plot, instead, weaving both together admirably. Dillard has been writing Star Trek novels for a long time, and it shows.

Obviously, I loved this one.

5 out of 5.
