My Star Trek fandom

Yesterday, Samantha and I went with friends to see  Quantum of Solace.  We were fortunate enough to be in one of the theaters that showed the new Star Trek trailer.  It will never be what the original series was, but I am still looking forward to it. The fact that Leonard Nimoy agreed to have anything to do with it does give me hope, despite some ( Read more... )

That preview was cool (saw it online) and am excited for the movie since I never go by previews and give movies a chance most of the time, lol.
One of my more obbsessed Star Trek friends was all upity since Kirk was driving in it and Kirk never knew how to drive or something (they mentioned specific episodes and such, lol)

Oh, I'll agree with all that. I've looked at IMDB, and there are more women in it. None, however, look to be main characters, with the exception of Uhura, and she is disrobing in the trailer.

I love Star Trek too. My favorite series was Next Generation. I'm glad to hear the new movie doesn't look so bad.

That's Samantha's favorite as well. Maybe it's like Doctor Who. Your fisrt Star Trek experience will always be "your" Star Trek.

Despite my vast number of Shat icons, I've never really been a Trek fan ( ... )

In my mind I'll likely put the movie in the alternate universe compartment and just enjoy it.

See, and this just shows my age again, I was a wee one when Star Trek was first broadcast. It was cutting edge then in many ways. Roddenberry had a social message that he made sure was at the heart of the series. I do get the camp of the show, but back then none of us looked at it as camp.

Next Gen had that same message. The later shows lost that at their heart and were the worse for it. As much as I love DS9 as great drama, I'm not sure how close I'd say that it was to the original vision.

Star Trek was always a favorite of mine as well. When I used to attend summer camp at the YMCA - they had one episode on tape and played it over and over again. Fortunately - it was The Menagerie.

I loved Next Generation and felt that the series peaked with DS9 as well. Afterwards - it always felt like it was trying to recapture the lost glory of the earlier series - without really trying to establish it's own identity.

Looking forward to the new movie and the inevitable fanboy backlash.
