It's a little late to start this, but I'm quite enjoying trying to keep my books post up to date (
just edited to include Frankenstein, Kidnapped and Ash) and I also lose track of the other stuff I watch, listen to and otherwise enjoy, so... yeah. My thoughts, let me show you them. Not precisely in order, but yeah.
Oh, and SPOILERS, although I probably won't go into huge detail...
Doctor Who
Obviously. Almost all totally awesome, as usual. Loved the River reveal; loved Canton Delaware III; loved Rory the Really Pissed Off Roman; loved Idris. HATED the bit of The Doctor's Wife with Rory and Amy and the writing on the walls - but in a good way. Also there were pirates and flesh, which were fine. Oh my god, when is the next bit, is it soon, tell me it's soon, it's soon right?
Thor
In which Idris Elba guarded a bridge made of rainbows like an ULTIMATE BADASS; Thor himself was super-adorable; Natalie Portman kept all her clothes on; Loki was made of allllll the pretty fucked up and it was the best day ever.
Midsummer Night's Dream
At the ENO. A weird, interesting production which didn't quite work because Oberon, Puck, Titania, the Boy and Theseus (in the first two acts and the last two minutes) were in a fairly grim story of child abuse in public schools; the four lovers, Hipollyta and Theseus (in the third act) were in a sixth form comedy-drama; and the rude mechanicals were in a comedy, because clearly. The changes in tone towards the end - and the fact that occasionally the stage direction was really, frustratingly static - made the production not quite as good, or as depressing, as it might've been.
Ray Davies @ Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall (singing with CEFC)
This was awesome - we did the entire Village Green Preservation Society album as kind of like one long piece, and it was fantastic. And then in the second half we did all the other stuff. We got Sunny Afternoon right, which was nice, and we got to do Lola, and Waterloo Sunset was nice and appropriate. Really fun times.
X-Men: First Class
I reeeeeeeally enjoyed most of this film. There were four or five things that were really quite not right about it (so. much. fridge logic), and yet it was kind of made of marshmallows and gay, so that was all right. Exhibit A:
all of these cartoons. Community
OMG OMG TROY AND ABED AND TROY AND ABED AND THE PAINTBALL AND THE GLEE JOKES AND THE STOP-MOTION CHRISTMAS EPISODE AND THE ZOMBIES AND ABED AND TROY AND THE PAINTBALL.
Attack the Block
This was really, really good fun. Hoodies versus aliens and it was the best day ever. One or two great scary/nasty moments and some really funny bits. And once or twice they were the same. 'You don't wanna go in there, blood.' Also, the big epic bit at the end, uuuuuuuuhn Moses I don't even care ilu you are so epic.
CEFC summer concert
Two concerts, in fact, one after the other, of some acapella but all choir-heavy music. I was TOTALLY KNACKERED afterwards, but it was pretty good. We did Kodaly's Missa Brevis, which I liked better than most people - it was a bit key-less but I thought mostly fun. Significantly more tuneful than, say, the Plague. Which I also enjoyed. And then also lots of little things, including Plorate Filii Israel by Carissimi, which turns out to be AMAZING, and one modern piece called Life by Jenni Rodditi which I am going to attempt to make a Doctor Who vid out of. :D
Comic Con
I actually went along to help Imo sell hats, and it was really great - we sold like 13 hats on the day I was there! And since the stall really didn't need two people on at all times, I got to do plenty of wandering around, looking at amazing costumes and trying not to spend too much money. I snuck in at the back of the Mark Sheppard [Badger in Firefly, Canton in Who, Sterling in Leverage... also in Supernatural] talk for the last question and so just caught him being uber-adorable and fan loving and sweet. Other than that, it's just always nice to hang out in the vicinity of so many happy nerds. I did not buy any t-shirts, graphic novels or action figures (even though they had a Sazh and he and Balthier would be very happy on a shelf together - maybe next year if I've actually managed to remove the action figures from their box by then), but I did buy a book of Studio Ghibli piano music, and discovered I can semi-play some of it, which is nice. Also THIRTEEN HATS.
How I Met Your Mother
I've been watching this on and off, I'm up to about series three. It's fine. It's not as good as Community but it's better than some sitcoms I've intentionally sat and watched. I enjoy the fact that basically it's Friends only slightly more meta. Neil Patrick Harris is the best thing in it, obviously. I'd feel guilty about my love of Barney, but y'know, it's NPH, I am quite comfortable not being able to divorce the fictional womanising bastard from the real gay broadway star.
At the moment it's quite amusing to me that no matter how many times they say 'no really, this is relevant to the bit with your mother!', it never ever is. I don't know if I would've felt the same if I'd been following it in real time though. Seriously, Ted. You're quite good at jokes but you suck at storytelling.
