It is October the 1st. The Nanowrimo forums were up for a few days, and are now down again, and I am making plot notes...
Sebastian's grandfather (Frederick Mason) was a radical philosopher, as well as an inventor, engineer and adventurer. He wrote books which may become important later. Treatise on Heroic Deeds and Human Limitations sort of thing. Denounced as a heretic by the Church, though celebrated by scientific community - behaved as an atheist but in fact believed that the gods had once existed and had deserted mankind. Didn't worship the aetherials, though some said he did because of the unseemly amount of time he spent studying them. All of which led him towards a belief in the need for heroes and the possibility of building a human/mechanical/aetherial hybrid.
