The door shuts behind Teddy and it's not the first time but the way James' breath catches in hs lungs tells him that it's probably the last time. Teddy's jacket and scarf are by the door, and he waits, waits for Teddy to come back because it's less than 5 degrees outside and he'll need them, really, he's not that stubborn, he can't be so angry that he'd freeze to prove a point.

An hour later and James thinks that maybe he is that stubborn.

A week after Teddy walks out, James sends the first letter. He doesn't make grandiose promises or swear up and down or blame Teddy. He keeps it short, a paragraph and a half and a love James. He sends Aloysius with it, gives him three treats for the trouble and when he sits by the window, he pretends he's not waiting.

The owl comes back with the letter unopened and ruffled feathers and he nips hard at James' fingers.

Over two weeks, James sends six more letters, each of which come back unopened, untouched except for the last. That one comes with a messy scrawl on the back of the envelope. It reads stop sending me letters.

Two months later, James comes home from walk and Teddy's in the living room. For a moment, his heart beats too hard and his stomach churns but then he notices the trunks by Teddy's feet and the empty space on the coffee table where Teddy's quidditch trophy had been that morning.

"I'm just getting my things," Teddy says, but he's standing still, staring straight back at James.

"We need to talk." Teddy shakes his head, turns away and stares out of the window. "Ted, please." His voice is on the edge of a whisper, too quiet in the room. It hangs between them, cold and stagnant and Teddy's still not looking at him. "Teddy, I'm sorry."

"Are you going to tell me you can change?" James swallows, gulps too loudly and shrugs.

"I can be better," he says. "I can be. I promise."

"It's not enough." Teddy exhales as he turns around. With a flick of his wand, his trunks are closing, slamming shut in time with James' heartbeat. "I love you, James, but...It's just not enough."

He leaves again, leaves James behind in a flat that's got spaces to fill now, a bed too big for one person and what feels like too much air for one person. It's not enough echoes in his head, a final reminder that it's over.
