It's not that Godric thought that their friendship was magical, that they had something special and mystical and amazing, it's just that when you've known somebody since you were five years old, you never really expect them to leave.
When you band together with someone against the twin torments of big sisters and girls, when you sneak into each other's bedrooms because you have to play Donkey Kong right this very second, when their house becomes your house too, when their parents forget to mind when you don't knock, when you sleep in their bed almost as much as you sleep in yours, you think that your friendship is pretty much going to last forever.
When you start Secondary with someone and don't laugh too much at their attempts to find their individuality, when you soothe hurts when the girl they liked turns them down, when you listen when they say maybe, actually, they don't like girls, or maybe they like girls, but they like Danny too, like like, when you sneak out of your house to drink cheap cider in the park and when you leave your bedroom window open so they can sneak in after a particularly awful argument with their parents, you start to imagine a life that involves grey hairs and kids and being called uncle.
You don't think that come university, your best friend is going to meet new friends, friends who don't use obnoxious nicknames or remind them of that time when they were seven. You don't expect them to ditch you in favour of new friends and you don't expect to hear bullshit excuses about studying, you don't expect to find them in a pub with new people who talk about art and classical music like the pretentious twats they are instead of at the library, like they said.
It's not that Godric thought that their friendship was magical, but he'd expected better than that from Salazar, expected something more like respect.
