US Press Freedom Tracker is hiring a journalist to report on issues related to, wait for it, press freedom in the US. It would mean a move back to New York, which I can't complain about. It's a solid start, and something I believe in. Passionately. It's a regular paycheck. Benefits too, which is a frigging rarity for journalists right now. As a political reporter, I have the background and connections to get into the room and talk to the people who need to be talked to about these issues.
Catch is, they're actively looking for journalists who, well, don't look like me. I mean, I'd be a solid candidate and I know it. They know it too. But what, I apply, get hired, they throw the Brown name up as a "hey look, he walked out of Wolf and now he's talking about press freedom" cause journalism is often about press releases too ... and then I find out that any one of the very talented black queer freelancers out there didn't get it?
Yeah, it's something to think about. The thing about breaking down the racist institutions that keep us in an ever plunging cycle of hell is that sometimes, when you're part of the establishment, you have to remove yourself from the circle to change the narrative. I can do the job. I'd be great at the job. But am I the right person for the job? Sometimes it means passing on the job so that someone who is just as or more qualified can step in.
But, I'd be damn good at it, too.
I think I've already talked myself out of applying for it. Just as with anything else, I'm more apt to get freelancing gigs than a lot of other people out there. But, that doesn't change the fact that this is something I really do care about. I really do.
