Cordelia Chase's closet had almost always overflowed with dresses, but only two knew how many had been placed inside never to be taken out to be used. Fred gasped when she opened the closet and beautiful things practically spilled into her hands. She didn't know she was being watched as she laid dress upon dress on the bed which had not been slept in in months.

She felt breezes flutter in the room but didn't see the misty eyes filling with tears as she smoothed the skirts of the dress meant to knock Angel's socks off when he was asked out, the dress meant to permanently remove Buffy from his mind, the dress intended for her proposal party . . . It wasn't until she removed a simple black frock that doors opened and shut.

The gown was free of all ornamentation except for a gem that looked like a perfect diamond right at its peephole. The doors slammed again. She nodded slowly, crying and shaking. She knew what Dennis was telling her. This was it. This was the gown their friend had chosen for her burial. It was her last dress, and just like her, it was a diamond in the rough.

The End
