Dan Graduated!

Technically he still has like a week and a half left of his residency, but I guess they have figured out at the hospital that if they wait until AFTER residency ends, they won't be able to get all the residents together in one place for a graduation ceremony, because everyone will be flying to the winds to their new jobs. So the graduation ceremony was this morning. At EIGHT O'CLOCK this morning! But totally worth it.

He was actually the second resident called up--I think they go by program, and one other program went before his that only had one resident per year, then Podiatry went, with just Dan, because then a bunch of them started going up in groups and getting called up one by one but not with the singling-out and story-telling that went along with Dan's turn.

His residency director told the story of how Dan got the position not because of his grades or his skills, but because they were intrigued that he listed himself as a juggler on his application. They apparently waffled on whether or not it would be appropriate to ask him to juggle at the interview, and resident a year ahead of Dan was apparently aghast, saying that was totally unprofessional or something, but then in comes Dan to the interview wearing a tie with the Disney characters juggling on it. So they gave him the knobs off the desk in the room (or something like that) at the end of the interview, and had him juggler for them.

He then pointed out that Dan was wearing the same tie today for graduation. And then he pulled out a fresh tube of tennis balls and had Dan juggle before he gave him his diploma :) I have it on video but I want to edit it up a little bit before I post it here. Anyway, I'm extremely proud of him--it's been a lot of work and I know he's a good doctor. Definitely worth getting up at 6:45am for.
