Abandoned House Excursion

Nov 20, 2006 16:30

I got together with a couple friends on Saturday. We had abandoned houses to explore. This one was tucked away in the woods off a gravel road.  We ignored all the "No Trespassing" signs.

The front door opened into this room.   There's not much left of the lace curtain.  This hole in the floor gained access to the dirt basement.  Actually more of a crawl space than a basement.

Here's another door. This small room had 3 doors. Seems like a lot of these old houses had several doors to the outside. You can see where they hung pictures or maybe family photographs on the wall.  No insulation in these walls, which I know was typical for the time period, and they must have been freezing in the winter.

The red room.  I love how these old houses always had such vibrant paint colors.  Judging by the clothes strewn around, this room must have belonged to a teenage boy or young man.

Leading into the tiny red room.

There was nothing in the closet.  The steep and narrow stairs led to an upstairs bedroom.   This house was curiously devoid of animal scat. I wonder why this place had none and the other places there was a thick carpet of poo  everywhere?

Upstairs.  I turned around and took this right as I got up here.  I  was by myself at this point, my friends didn't want to go up and I could see out the window right here they were already outside in the back yard.

Two seater outhouse. I can't imagine trying to use this thing in the middle of Iowa's winters!

Upstairs. I had my camera on a slow shutter speed because it was actually much darker than this.  More clothes here, and books. I got a bit freaked out up here -  maybe because I was alone and all the men's clothes and medical stuff got to me a little.

Old suitcase.

The books seemed to be mostly medical journals or anatomy books.

Hundreds of old beer cans.  Pull tab era.

Here's a page ripped out and on the floor.  Atrophy of the Skin.  ew.

Headboard as fence.

Looking at this picture now, I realize that there wasn't a kitchen.  At least, I don't recall there being another room at the back of the house. If there was a kitchen it wasn't connected.  Or maybe they did all their cookin' out back? There definitely wasn't any plumbing  or electricity.

There were several of these small sheds.
