It's very late by the time you hear back from her. First message of the day arrives at 10:17pm when all of her other friends have gone to bed. "-flops-" is all she'll type into the message box, as though, at her arrival, you're meant to drop anything you might be doing to write with her.
Was it always like this, you have to wonder now. You used to be real friends, talking all day via Skype from the moment you arrived home from work to the moment you both decided to call it a night and go to bed. Once you were close - discussing everything.
Then you consider it a bit more. Hadn't she always changed the subject when you were having a bad day? Well, she might've felt uncomfortable with negative emotions. Hadn't she always talked about herself and what she wanted? Well, you never pushed to talk about yourself, all that much, really. Hadn't she always steered you away from ideas you wanted if they didn't interest her? Hadn't she always ignored those things you said that she didn't like to hear?
No, you never were real friends - not really. She simply got used to using you, and you let her because you had no one else with whom you could talk. Now, however, that you're getting to know her again, you see all of this, and yet you still can't walk away. Well, this time, it's your choice.
Are you tired, yet, of being used? How much more can you tolerate before you simply walk away?
Only time, it seems, will tell.
