Yesterday I went with Nilmini and her mother for our second sari fitting. I stood to be pinned and measured, while three small of stature and formidable of temperament Sri Lankan women talked around me, flipping effortlessly between Sinhala and English. They could almost have been a subcontinental version of the maiden, mother and crone.

Nilmini's wedding sari is so richly and intricately patterned, I feel slightly emotional every time I see it - I almost have the sense that its telling a story that I don't have the wisdom or background to hear. My bridesmaid's sari has butterflies hiding in the folds, so subtle against the vibrant colour of the silk, that I entirely missed them the first time I examined the fabric.
